    [02] Cyprus - Motor tanker - Collision

Nicosia, Aug 23 (CNA) -- Cyprus Department of Merchant Shipping (CDMS) has said it was not formally informed about a criminal investigation initiated by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) concerning the alleged collision of a Cypriot flag motor tanker ("VIRGO") with a United States of America flag fishing vessel ("STARBOUND") earlier this month, in international waters, around 130 miles of Cape Ann, Massachusetts, during which three American fishermen, members of the crew of the vessel, lost their lives.

A press release issued by the CDMS noted that the consent of Cyprus for the conduct of a criminal investigation in the name of and or on behalf of Cyprus was never sought and that the removal from the vessel, by the RCMP, of all records and documents which could contain information on the incident "hampers the investigation which the Government of the Republic of Cyprus initiated and severely inhibits any action that Cyprus may find necessary to take, in accordance with its laws, against those who might be accountable, if it can be established that the 'VIRGO' was involved in the incident."

    [03] Cyprus - Oil reserves

Nicosia, Aug 23 (CNA) -- Cyprus officials will have meetings with government officials from Egypt, Lebanon, Israel and possibly Libya, on issues relating to oil and natural gas reserves in eastern Mediterranen, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here today. Cyprus has already held similar talks with Syria.

Replying to questions on whether there are any positive indications stemming from scientific researches for the existence of oil reserves in the region, Papapetrou answered in the affirmative. He did not elaborate. CNA/MK/RM/GP/2001

[04] British High Commissioner - Cyprus problem

Nicosia, Aug 23 (CNA) -- Britain's High Commissioner to Cyprus Edward Clay said today that the UN process on Cyprus "is continuous" adding that Britain works towards that direction.
