[04] President Clerides - Independence Day

Nicosia, Sep 30 (CNA) -- The UN Security Council's statement expressing the disappointment of its members over the unjustified decision of the Turkish side to reject the Secretary General's invitation to talks on Cyprus is supportive of the further development of the initiative for the resumption of talks, Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides said today, adding that the Greek Cypriot side will make full use of the statement "in good faith and will continue to respond positively to the invitations of the Secretary General."

In a televised message on the occasion of tomorrow's 41st anniversary of Cyprus Independence Day, the President said that after the terrorist attacks in the US perhaps now more than ever the solution of international and regional problems becomes necessary adding that a solution to the Cyprus problem based on UN relevant resolutions, the acquis communautaire and European Court of Human Rights' rulings would help create the right circumstances which will facilitate all states of the region to contribute more effectively to the global campaign against terrorism.

Referring to developments in the Cyprus problem President Clerides said "Turkey and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash disregard now the UN provocatively while continuing to blatantly violate international law and the UN resolutions regarding the Cyprus problem."

He pointed out the Greek Cypriot side seeks a solution to the problem consistent with the UN relevant resolutions, the acquis communautaire and the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights and stressed that "the international community must now exert to a greater extent its influence on the Turkish side to make it come back to the negotiating table."

Referring to the international community's struggle to combat terrorism, the Cyprus President said "Cyprus, with its small means, is already contributing to the global campaign against international terrorism", pointing out "we shall remain firmly committed to the basic aim of international community for the radical confrontation of international terrorism." [05] Greek Defence Minister - Cyprus - Talks

Nicosia, Sep 30 (CNA) -- Greek Defence Minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos, who arrived here today for a two-day visit, representing the Greek government in the celebrations to mark the 41st anniversary of Cyprus' Independence, said that Greece and Cyprus jointly promote the two countries' security while they both contribute towards setting up a comprehensive security policy aiming at combating terrorism.

Speaking after a meeting he held today with Cyprus Defence Minister Sokratis Hasikos, and invited to comment on statements made today by Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit, who has allegedly said the European Union should not accept Cyprus as a member, claiming that the government- controlled areas of the island are a centre of money laundering, Tsochatzopoulos said Ecevit's statements "are on the wrong track and reveal Turkey's weakness to hinder political development in the region, a development that leads the Cyprus Republic into the EU."

According to Reuters, in an interview with CNN Turk, Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit urged today the European Union to think twice about accepting Cyprus as a member, saying the government-controlled areas of the Republic were a centre for money laundering and anti-Turkish "terrorism".

Tsochatzopoulos said Turkey, has repeatedly denied restoring the rights of the people of Cyprus and its unity, remaining for 27 years now an occupational force and expressed certainty that "Turkey awaits for the international verdict and response to alter this behaviour and stance."

Replying to a question on the global campaign against terrorism, the Greek Minister said Cyprus and Greece hold a "very clear position" on the issue of combating international terrorism adding that "as we jointly promote the security and defence of the Cyprus Republic and Greece we also participate in the international community's effort, within the framework of international law, principles and values, to give a common response to this issue which constitutes a world threat."

Replying to a question, Tsochatzopoulos said the Cyprus National Guard's annual military manoeuvres code-named "Nikiforos" (bearer of victory), will take place next month as planned, with the participation of Greek military forces.

On his part Hasikos, replying to a question, noted that he and Tsochatzopoulos hold consultations on a regular basis.

Later on the Greek Minister met with the President and the members of the House Defence Committee.

After the meeting both President of the Committee Yiannakis Omirou and Tsochatzopoulos underlined that the international community should contribute decisively to UN efforts for a settlement of the Cyprus problem.

Later on Tsochatzopoulos met with Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides. No statements were made after the meeting. CNA/MK/RM/2001
