[01] "Privatisation and liberalisation in the EU" - Seminar
Nicosia, Oct 5 (CNA) -- Commerce, Industry and Tourism Minister Nicos
Rolandis said that Cyprus' accession to the European Union calls for the
liberalization of certain services, which now are monopolies, and added
that the government should help create a competitive environment.
Addressing a three - day seminar on "Privatisation and liberalization in
the EU: the UK experience" in Nicosia, Rolandis said liberalization would
bring "many and undeniable" benefits, noting that the meeting will provide
valuable information to partcipants as well as to Cyprus in its course
towards the EU.

[04] UN Secretary General - Independence Day - Message
Nicosia, Oct 5 (CNA) -- UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has congratulated
President Glafcos Clerides on the Republic's Independence Day, noting that
the UN can count on the continued leadership, commitment and support for
Cyprus.
In his message, Annan referred to the President's pledge at last year's
Millennium summit to promote democracy and the rule of law, protect
children and free people from the scourge of war and abject poverty and
make the UN more effective as an instrument for pursuing noble objectives.

[05] Cypriot women - Silent condemnation - Terrorism
Nicosia, Oct 5 (CNA) -- Cypriot women from all walks of life and of
different political shades held a silent candle vigil tonight to condemn
the recent terrorist attacks in the US and express their support and
solidarity with the families of the victims.
"A candle and a flower" was the name women gave their protest against
violence and terrorism, which began with a church service officiated by the
primate of the Church of Cyprus Archbishop Chrysostomos. Present at today's
vigil were First Lady Irini Clerides, deputies, wives and relatives of
missing persons since the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus and many other
Cypriot women.
