Cyprus - CoE Congress - Local Democracy
Nicosia, Oct 15 (CNÁ) -- Cyprus Interior Minister Christodoulos
Christodoulou stated here today that the state will adjust its legislation
on local administration to fully comply with the European relevant
legislation.
In an address, read out for him at a meeting on "Local Democracy in Cyprus"
held in Nicosia, Christodoulou noted that certain recommendations included
in a report of the Council of Europe Congress of Local Democracy in Cyprus
are in line with the government policies to be promoted after the December
2001 local administration elections. He added the government follows
closely the recommendations and that he will outline the government
positions on the report, before the Congress Plenary, November 8, 2001, in
Strasbourg.

President Clerides - Bulgarian Ambassador - Credentials
Nicosia, Oct 15 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides said today that the
Cyprus problem remains unresolved due to the Turkish intransigence and
outright disrespect of relevant UN resolutions and expressed hope that the
international community will exert all its influence on the Turkish side to
come to the negotiating table with goodwill so as to pave the way for a
peaceful solution to the Cyprus problem.
Receiving the credentials of Bulgaria's new Ambassador to Cyprus Krassimir
Stefanov, President Clerides congratulated the Bulgarian official on his
country's election as a non-Permanent member of the Security Council adding
that Bulgaria's support to Cyprus "at this crucial time is instrumental".
Presenting his credentials Stefanov referred to Cyprus' bid to join the
European Union said Cyprus' progress is "impressive."
