Straw: The Cyprus question will not be marginalised

London, Nov 7 (CNA) -- Britain wishes to see negotiations on the Cyprus question to take place alongside Cyprus' accession negotiations to the European Union, British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said today, pointing out that Britain does not approach the latter in terms of the success of the former.

Speaking after his 40-minute long meeting with Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides, in London on his way to New York, Straw said Britain's approach on Cyprus' application to join the EU has been consistent, expressing wish "to see Cyprus becoming a member of the EU as soon as the criteria for membership are fulfilled."

Papantoniou: Attack against Cyprus is attack against Greece

Athens, Nov 7 (CNA) -- Greece's National Defence Minister Yiannos Papantoniou has said that an offensive against the Republic of Cyprus would constitute an offensive against Greece, adding that Greece will give a "battle" so that Cyprus' accession to the European Union would be realised.

Speaking after his meeting today in Athens with Cyprus Defence Minister Sokratis Hasikos, Papantoniou said the fact the Cypriot Defence Minister is the first counterpart he meets after assuming his new duties as National Defence Minister shows "the fraternal relations between Cyprus and Greece", while on his part Hasikos said Cyprus' defence will continue to be enhanced within the framework of the joint defence pact, between Greece and Cyprus.| CNA/KI/RM/CST/2001
