[02] British envoy sees "renewed air of urgency" in Cyprus peace effort

by Maria Myles New York, Nov 14 (CNA) - British representative for Cyprus Lord David Hannay has welcomed what he called "the renewed air of urgency" about moving forward with regard to the UN-led peace effort for a Cyprus settlement, saying that efforts are being redoubled and that there is adequate time to reach a solution within the time limit set out by virtue of Cyprus' accession to the European Union.

In an interview with CNA, Lord David expressed regret that Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash did not accept the invitation by UN Secretary General to resume negotiations but noted that this now belongs to the past and people must look to the future with a view to getting the peace process moving again. [03] House President opens exhibition of G/C and T/C caricaturists

Nicosia, Nov 14 (CNA) -- Cyprus House President Demetris Christofias opened last night in Nicosia an exhibition on "Politics and Caricature" organised by the House of Representatives to pay tribute to the struggle of Greek and Turkish Cypriot caricaturists.

The Turkish Cypriot caricaturists were not able to attend the inauguration ceremony in the government-controlled part of the divided capital Nicosia, because the self-styled regime in the Turkish-occupied part of the island hindered them from crossing into the Republic's free areas.| CNA/RM/MK/GP/2001

1310:CYPRESS:05 PACE rapporteur holds talks in Cyprus Nicosia, Nov 14 (CNA)-- Rapporteur on the situation in Cyprus of the Political Affairs Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Andras Barsony has reiterated that the Council of Europe (CoE) supports Cyprus' accession to the EU and he expressed hope that this time the Turkish Cypriot leadership will change their policy because they cannot isolate themselves and the Turkish Cypriot community from the rest of Europe.

Barsony on a four-day visit to Cyprus was having today contacts with Turkish Cypriot political leaders in the Turkish-occupied northern part of the island. Yesterday he spent the day having talks with Greek Cypriot political party leaders in the free areas of the Republic.
