    PACE new President appeals for Cyprus settlement

    Strasbourg, Jan 22 (CNA) -- The newly elected President of the Parliamentary Assembly of Council of Europe (PACE) Peter Scheider appealed to Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash to find a solution to the Cyprus problem.

    Speaking to CNA after his election, Scheider also expressed his readiness to visit Cyprus if that would help in the efforts to find a settlment.

    Turkey must meet its obligations, says Council of Europe

    Strasbourg, Jan 22 (CNA) -- The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe has told Turkey once again that it should meet its legal obligations emanating from the European Convention of Human Rights and fulfill its commitments with regard to a European Court of Human Rights judgment relating to Greek Cypriot Titina Loizidou.

    Cyprus and Egypt sign protocol on political consultations

    Nicosia, Jan 22 (CNA) - Egypt is looking forward to Cyprus' accession to the European Union as it counts on the role Cyprus can play between the Middle East and Europe, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Arab Republic of Egypt Dr. Mohamed Shaaban said here today, after the signing of a protocol on regular political consultations between the two countries.

    Spokesman denies Turkish press reports

    Nicosia, Jan 22 (CNA) -- The government denied today vehemently allegations in the Turkish press that Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash have agreed to establish "a new state" in Cyprus.

    Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou also denied claims in the Turkish media that Clerides and Denktash have agreed to do away with titles and flags and create a "new state."

    US Ambassador welcomes direct talks

    Nicosia, Jan 22 (CNA)-- US Ambassador in Nicosia Donald Bandler welcomed here today UN-led direct talks on the Cyprus question, that began here January 16, between Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, describing them as "the best way to come to a comprehensive solution".

    EU funded project implemented in Cyprus, Spain and Poland

    Nicosia, Jan 22 (CNA) -- Cyprus, Spain and Poland participate in a European Union funded project called e-minder, that aims to increase the level of e-Commerce activities in the island and bridge the gap between the more and the least developed European Regions.

    The project, under the Information Society Technologies Directorate of the European Commission, has two main objectives: to raise awareness in the small and medium enterprises sector and within the education and training structures about the use of Information and Communication Technologies and their application to the field of e-commerce and to provide citizens and companies with the required service and support to implement their e-commerce related activities. It will be completed during the next two years and it will cost 1,3 million Cyprus pounds (one pound trades at 1.5 US dollars).
