Washington, Jan 26 (CNA) -- The US welcome the positive steps in terms
of the direct negotiations on Cyprus, under the UN aegis, State
Department's Deputy Spokesman Philip Reeker has told his briefing.

House of Representatives passed the state budget for 2002
Nicosia, Jan 26 (CNA) - The House of Representatives, after a three-day
marathon debate, passed last night the state budget for the year 2002,
with right-wing ruling Democratic Rally (DISI), centre Democratic Party
(DIKO), the United Democrats (EDI) and the Democratic Struggle
Movemement (ADIK) voting for the budget.
Left-wing AKEL and the Socialdemocrats Movement (KISOS) abstained but
voted in favour of expenditure for defence and refugees, while KISOS
also voted in favour of expenditure for Cyprus' harmonisation with the
acquis communautaire. The Ecologists-Environmentalists Movement and
right-wing New Horizons voted against.
