Cyprus exports mandoras and lemons to USA and Canada

New York, Apr 11 (CNA) -- With a solid reputation of exporting citrus of exceptional quality to Europe, Cyprus is now exporting, for the first time, mandoras and lemons to the United States and Canada.

"Exporting citrus to the US has not only been a case in diversifying from our traditional markets of Europe, but also posed a challenge," Cyprus Trade Commissioner Dennis Droushiotis has said.

Finance Minister favours CSE privatisation

Nicosia, Apr 11 (CNA) - Cypriot Finance Minister, Takis Klerides, is in favour of the privatisation of the Cyprus Stock Exchange (CSE) and said he has already requested a study on the issue.

Klerides told CNA, however, that this was not the right time to privatise CSE, as the institution was still "in its infancy".

Nicosia, Apr 11 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

Friday and Saturday: 12/4/2002 to 13/4/2002

The weather will by fine with local mist patches over night. The prevailing wind during day time will be southwest to west gentle 3 to 4bf and during night time light catabatic, mainly northwest, 2 to 3bf. The state of sea will be slight to moderate.

The temperature will range from 16 degrees over the highest peaks of Troodos mountains to 23 over the coastal areas and to 26 degrees inland.

The minimum temperature will range from 6 degrees over the highest peaks of Troodos range to 12 degrees over the coastal areas.

Outlook for Sunday and Monday: 14/4/2002 to 15/4/2002

The weather on Sunday and Monday will continue fine with a notable rise in temperature.

Only one acquis chapter left for Cyprus to wrap up

Nicosia, Apr 11 (CNA) - Cyprus has wrapped up work on the three of the four remaining chapters of the acquis communautaire. The Republic's Chief Negotiator for accession to the EU, George Vassiliou, told CNA from Paris that red-tape work will be concluded this month on the chapters of taxation and regional policy, and that in May the chapter on competition will also be provisionally closed. The remaining chapter is that of agriculture.

T/C daily says Palestinians better off without motherland

Nicosia, Apr 11 (CNA) - Editor-in-chief of Turkish Cypriot daily newspaper "Afrika", Sener Levent, in an article published today, says the Palestinians should not worry about not having a motherland to save them, because the Turkish Cypriots did and it got them nowhere.

He says the Turkish Cypriots "always succumb and express gratitude, and are continuously with their hands stretched asking for help, as if they are beggars".

If the Turkish Cypriots want to "defend our pride, our saviour is over our head like a hangman", Levent adds, referring to Turkey as the executioner.

Cyprus hosts EU - PCN Conference

Nicosia, Apr 11 (CNA) -- Cyprus plays host to a meeting of the Permanent Committee of Nursing (PCN) of the European Union with the participation of 50 representatives from 22 countries, the 15 EU member-states and seven candidate countries.

This is the first time that a candidate country, Cyprus, hosts such a meeting, President of Cyprus Nurses Association Aggeliki Tapakoude told CNA. It convenes twice a year, in spring and autumn.

British minister calls for more willingness to compromise

Nicosia, Apr 11 (CNA) -- Britain's Minister of State for Europe Peter Hain said here today "there is a real will in Cyprus, in both communities to seek and reach a settlement" and sent out the message that "Britain is right behind you" in this effort. He also said the UN-led direct talks between the leaders of the island's two communities offer "the only road to a just and lasting comprehensive settlement."

He said that what is needed is "more courage, more determination and more willingness to compromise," pointing out that "the clock is ticking."

In statements after a working lunch with Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides, Hain said "crucial decisions" will be made at the European Council in Copenhagen and added that "the time for intensive negotiations is now, in the weeks and months ahead."

Cyprus merchant shipping holds sixth place worldwide

Nicosia, Apr 11 (CNA) -- A total of 2.200 vessels carry the Cyprus flag thus ranking the island's merchant shipping in the sixth place worldwide, Communications and Works Minister Averof Neophytou said here today, adding that Cyprus shipping contribution to the country's economy is two percent of the Gross Domestic Product, bringing in more than 100 million pounds. (One Cyprus pound trades 1,5 dollars).
