    Weather forecast for Cyprus

    Nicosia, May 20 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Tuesday and Wednesday: 21/05/2002 to 22/05/2002

    Mainly fine on Tuesday with small probability of isolated in the afternoon. On Wednesday the weather will become unstable with local showers or thunderstorms mainly in the afternoon.

    The wind will be SW'ly to NW'ly 2-3 BF during mornings and nights. In the afternoon the wind will increase and will reach 4 BF and locally 5 BF. The state of sea will be slight to moderate. The maximum temperature will range between 28-30C inland and between 25-27C over the coast.

    Outlook for Thursday and Friday: 23/05/2002 to 24/05/2002

    On Thursday the weather will continue unstable while on Friday it will gradually improve.

    Nicosia, May 20 (CNA) -- US Congressman Frank Pallone has called on Ankara to put aside its unreasonable demands at the peace talks and negotiate in good faith with a view to achieving a solution in Cyprus.

    He also said Turkey should back Cyprus' accession to the European Union and undertake new initiatives on Cyprus.

    Government: we keep different issues separately

    Nicosia, May 20 (CNA) -- Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou stressed here today that the UN peace effort to solve the Cyprus question and the country's accession course for European Union membership are two different things.

    He also said that at this stage the Greek Cypriot side focuses its attention on working until the end of June to conclude an agreement on the core issues (governance, security, territory and property).

    EU envoy informs Palestinians on progress for their fate

    Larnaca, May 20 (CNA) - EU Middle East envoy Miguel Angel Moratinos met here today with the 13 Palestinians brought to Cyprus after being released from Bethlehem's Nativity Church. He said the legal and political discussions in Brussels regarding which countries will take them in "have practically been finalised" and noted that EU deliberations will be wrapped up tomorrow.

    Moratinos visited the Palestinians at their Larnaca hotel, accompanied by the Palestinian Authority's Representative in Cyprus Samir abu Gazhalleh, Spanish Ambassador to Cyprus Ignacio Garcia Valdecasas, and Head of the European Commission delegation on the island Donato Chiarini.

    Nicosia, May 20 (CNA) - Cyprus has "basically closed" the chapter of competition of the EU acquis communautaire and will soon close half part of agriculture chapter regarding veterinary and phytosanitary, Cyprus' chief negotiator with the European Union George Vassiliou announced here today, after a meeting with Michael Leigh, Director at the DG Enlargement of the European Commission.

    Cyprus warns of insecure transactions with occupied areas

    Nicosia, May 20 (CNA) - The Cypriot government is stepping up its efforts to alert international public opinion, especially British, about the serious implications "purchasing" property in the Turkish occupied areas of the Republic may entail.

    Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said the message the government wanted to send out was that "anyone 'buying' from an illegal owner will not be secure and at the end will lose his or her money".

    Nicosia, May 20 (CNA) - Archbishop of the Church of Cyprus Chrysostomos, who is in his 10th day of therapy at "Evangelismos" hospital in Athens, may be leaving the intensive care unit later in the week, if his health continues to improve.

    A medical bulletin issued by the Archbishop's doctors at "Evangelismos" says there have been no complications and "if the progressive improvement of his condition continues, it is possible he may be discharged from the Intensive Care Unit this week".

    Nicosia, May 20 (CNA) - The number of women suffering from arteriosclerosis today is growing, due to smoking and stress of double responsibility of a career and keeping a house, according to the President of the Vascular Society of Cyprus, Nicos Angelides.

    Speaking at a press conference today in view of the 12th Mediterranean Congress of Angiology and Vascular Surgery, which will take place in Paphos from May 22 to 26 and focus on arteriosclerosis, Angelides said there is no doubt the disease is "the primary cause of death worldwide" and that the illness now appears in younger people, sometimes as young as 35.
