    UN Secretary General sends Clerides condolences

    Nicosia, Jul 16 (CNA) -- UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has extended his deepest condolences to Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides, to the people of Cyprus and to the relatives of the National Guard Commander, Lieutenant General Evangelos Florakis and the other four army officers who lost their lives last week in a helicopter crash near Pafos.

    In his message of condolences to Clerides, Annan said: "It was with deep sadness that I learned of the helicopter accident in which Lieutenant General Evangelos Florakis Commander of the National Guard, Brigadier General Stylianos Demenegas, Commander of the Air Force and three other officers lost their lives."

    Jerusalem, Jul 16 (CNA) -- Cyprus has the potential of becoming an economic, political and cultural bridge between the European Union (EU) and the countries of the Middle East and north Africa, Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides has said.

    Speaking during a dinner offered here last night by the Israel Council of Foreign Affairs, in the presence of Jerusalem Greek Orthodox Patriarch Irinaios, the Foreign Minister talked about Cyprus' strong feelings "that it has an obligation to contribute not only to the efforts to halt the escalating spiral of violence in its immediate vicinity, but also to play its role in the efforts to achieve a comprehensive peace that would make the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East an area of peace and stability."

    Introducing the Minister, Council member Bein Yohanan make a short reference to the history of Cyprus and its accession course to the EU.

    Arafat says Cyprus can help Middle East peace process

    by Nicos Markides Ramallah, Jul 16 (CNA) -- In all circumstances, Cyprus can help so that all the initiatives for a peaceful settlement of the Palestinian question proceed to a final, just and lasting solution of the problem, President of the Palestinian Authority Yasser Arafat said today, after meeting at his office in Ramallah with Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs Ioannis Kasoulides.

    Arafat thanked Kasoulides for his visit under the current circumstances, saying that the relation between the Palestinians and the Cyprus government "is an historical and very close relation."

    Fifty nine per cent of Israelis support peace with the Palestinians and are in favour of a Palestinian state, Arafat said, adding that "all the Cyprus governments made very strong and continuous efforts to achieve permanent peace in the Holy Land".
