Nicosia, Aug 17 (CNA) -- The Union of Cyprus Journalists (UCJ) intends to nominate the Chief Editor of the Turkish Cypriot daily "Afrika" Sener Levent for the Lorenzo Natali International Prize for Journalism, Excellence in Reporting Human Rights, Democracy and Development, established by the countries of the European Union.

On 8 August, an illegal court in the Turkish-occupied part, found Sener Levent and Memduh Ener, editor of the same newspaper, "guilty of libel" against the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, the occupation army and Turkey, in connection with an article Ener wrote on 29 July 1999 and imposed on each of them a six-month "jail sentence".

UCJ said yesterday that it continued its representations and actions at home and abroad, denouncing the illegal "imprisonment" of the two Turkish Cypriot journalists and it had asked for a meeting with the Acting Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in Cyprus Zbigniew Wlosowicz.

    Christofias: Sovereignty is not negotiable

Paphos, Aug 17 (CNA) -- House of Representatives President and acting President of the Republic Demetris Christofias has stressed that Cyprus sovereignty is single and indivisible.

Christofias also underlined that apart from expressing its readiness for a solution of the Cyprus problem the Greek Cypriot side should be decisive on issues that are not negotiable, such as sovereignty.
