    United Nations, Sep 12 (CNA) -- A report to the UN General Assembly by the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan on the organisation's activities in the past year outlines his attempts to help make headway in the UN-led Cyprus peace talks, which started on the island in January.

    New York, Sep 12 (CNA) -- The Cyprus problem will be at the top of the agenda at a meeting here today between Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou and his Turkish counterpart Sukru Sina Gurel.

    According to a well informed Greek foreign ministry source, Papandreou will point out to Gurel that in spite of the fluid situation in Turkey, there can be positive moves in the question of Cyprus towards a settlement.

    Papandreou will call on Gurel to persuade Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash to change its attitude at the UN-led Cyprus peace talks, that have so far stumbled on his insistence on the creation of two separate states on the island.

    Nicosia, Sep 12 (CNA) - Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou has confirmed press reports that Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash has submitted a new document on all the aspects of the Cyprus question, at Wednesday's meeting in the context of the UN-led peace talks.

    The Spokesman said that, judging by Denktash's public remarks about the document, it does not appear to be contributing in the effort to break the current deadlock.

    European Heritage Days in Cyprus on September 29

    Nicosia, Sep 12 (CNA) - The European Heritage Days this year in Cyprus will be held on September 29 with the theme "Nicosia Within the Walls, a Multicultural Dialogue".

    Organised by the Ministry of the Interior and the Department of Town Planning and Housing, and under the auspices of the Council of Europe, there will be walks throughout the old part of Nicosia, which will include well known but also unknown monuments, some of which are usually closed to the public, and restored houses.

    Government determined to stop poaching, says Interior Minister

    Nicosia, Sep 12 (CNA) - The government will insist on the implementation of the law, which forbids the poaching of small birds, Minister of the Interior Andreas Panayiotou said here today.

    Speaking after a meeting of the Council of Ministers, Panayiotou said "the position of the Council of Ministers is clear: No irregularity, the law is clear, it prohibits the trapping of any birds using mist nets or lime sticks or any other method".

    Nicosia, Sep 12 (CNA) - The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    On Friday (13.9.2002) and Saturday (14.9.2002), the weather will be mainly fine with local clouds in the afternoon.

    Winds will be light, variable, in the morning and moderate, southwesterly to westerly, in the afternoon.

    Temperatures will range between 19 to 34 degrees Celsius inland, 21 to 32 degrees along the south coast, 21 to 30 degrees along the west coast, and 14 to 24 degrees over the mountains.

    On Sunday (15.9.2002) and Monday (16.9.2002), no significant change is expected.
