    Cyprus Defence Minister on Iraq

    Nicosia, Oct 7 (CNA) -- Cyprus hopes an armed intervention in Iraq will be avoided but if this is not possible, then Cyprus should not be involved, even through the British Bases on the island, Defence Minister Socrates Hasikos said today.

    The Cypriot minister noted the government is closely monitoring the mobility in the British Bases lately but it is not worried.

    Nicosia, Oct 7 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Tuesday and Wednesday: 8/10/2002 to 9/10/2002 ---------------------- Mainly fine becoming locally partly cloudy with risk of isolated shower during early afternoon. The wind will be light variable during night and morning and moderate southwest to west wind during afternoon. The temperature will range between (19-30)C inland and south coast, between (18-27)C west coast and between (11-18)C over the mountains.

    Outlook for Thursday and Friday: 10/10/2002 to 11/10/2002

    The weather will be mainly fine with increase in temperature.

    Nicosia, Oct 7 (CNA) - Cuba's visiting Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Angel Dalmau Fernandez, reaffirmed his country's support to a solution of the Cyprus problem based on UN resolutions and decisions of the Non-Aligned Movement.

    Speaking through an interpreter, Fernandez, who met President of the House of Representatives Demetris Christofias, also referred to the American economic embargo against Cuba, and expressed his conviction that in the near future the Americans will put an end to it and Cuba will remain a socialist government.

    Commission says Cyprus fulfils EU accession criteria

    Brussels, Oct 7 (CNA) - The European Commission will announce on Wednesday in a clear manner that Cyprus fulfils both the economic and political criteria for accession to the European Union, while the final decision will be taken in December at the Copenhagen European Council based on the conclusions of the 1999 Helsinki summit.

    The most important development in relation to Cyprus is the fact that the document, which was submitted by the Commissioner responsible for enlargement Gunter Verheugen, under no circumstances relates the Cyprus problem with the island's accession to the EU, neither does it imply anything in that direction.

    London, Oct 7 (CNA) - The British government believes that the creation of the two ad hoc committees to deal with technical matters of the Cyprus issue as well as arrangements for a new meeting of President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash with the UN Secretary General in November is an encouraging development.

    Spokesman says committees will not recognise occupation regime

    Nicosia, Oct 7 (CNA) - Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou stressed there is no issue of recognition of the regime in the Turkish occupied north of Cyprus from the work carried out by the ad hoc committee set up to deal with the treaties signed by both sides and determine which ones will be incorporated into a future reunited Cyprus.

    Speaking after the Council of Ministers meeting, Papapetrou said the government has prepared alternative scenarios and there are strong international opinions that what is being ventured, in relation to the two subcommittees, under no circumstances breeds any dangers for recognition of the illegal regime.

    Indian Premier arrives for two-day official visit

    Larnaca, Oct 7 (CNA) - Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee arrived on the island this afternoon for a two-day official visit.

    He was welcomed at Larnaca Airport by Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides and India's High Commissioner to Cyprus.

    The red carpet was laid out and the Indian Premier inspected the guard of honour amidst high security measures. A Police helicopter hovered the area while snipers took positions in key areas around the airport.

    Countdown for Cyprus' accession begins, says van der Meer

    Nicosia, Oct 7 (CNA) - The countdown towards the accession of Cyprus to the European Union (EU) has started and the first step will be on Wednesday when the European Commission will adopt the enlargement package, Head of the European Commission Delegation to Cyprus, Adriaan van der Meer, has said.

    Speaking after meeting House of Representatives President Demetris Christofias, van der Meer said that despite the press speculation on the outcome of the proposals of the Commission, he could not say what exactly will happen but that he will give a press conference on Wednesday at the Delegation's premises.

    New York, Oct 7 (CNA) - Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash underwent open-heart surgery today at the Columbia Presbyterian Hospital.

    According to Turkish sources, Denktash's operation went well. The Turkish Cypriot leader is now resting in the recovery room of the intensive care unit.

    It was known to CNA that Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides ordered flowers to be sent to Denktash as soon as an official announcement is be made by the hospital.
