    United Nations, Oct 18 (CNA) -- UN Secretary General's special adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto visited Turkey on Wednesday to push forward the peace negotiations on Cyprus, UN spokeswoman Hua Jiang has said.

    Cyprus opposes reproductive cloning of humans

    New York, Oct 18 (CNA) -- Cyprus opposes reproductive cloning of human beings, Ambassador Andreas Jacovides, the Republic's representative to the Sixth (Legal) Committee of the 57th session of the UN General Assembly, has said.

    The reproductive cloning of human beings raises ethical, moral, philosophical, scientific, as well as legal issues and has far reaching implications in all of these areas, he told the committee.

    Ireland to work more closely with Cyprus

    Nicosia, Oct 18 (CNA) -- Ireland hopes to see a political settlement in Cyprus soon and looks forward to increased cooperation once the Republic joins the European Union in 2004, when Dublin will hold the six-monthly rotating EU presidency, the country's Finance Minister Charlie McCreevey has said.

    He was speaking to his Cypriot counterpart Takis Klerides, who is on an official visit to Ireland, to discuss fiscal and monetary matters of common interest.

    EU Commissioner: Cyprus' accession will go ahead

    Nicosia, Oct 18 (CNA) -- European Union Commissioner responsible for enlargement Gunter Verheugen has made it clear that the EU decision on Cyprus' accession will go ahead, even if a plan for a political settlement is put forward on the eve of the December summit in Copenhagen.

    He also warned against postponement of the decision saying ''everything will fall apart'' and recalling the EU Helsinki decision that a settlement would facilitate accession but it is not a precondition for it.

    Nicosia, Oct 18 (CNA) -- The United Nations Peace-Keeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), the longest serving peace-keeping forces in the world, will provide full entertainment on Sunday for everybody, at a special event to mark UN day.

    Athens, Oct 18 (CNA) Greek President Costis Stephanopoulos described the European Commissions 2002 progress report on Cyprus as very significant.

    In a short statement here before his meeting with President of the Cyprus Republic Glafcos Clerides, the Greek President said he considers the report very significant because it looks forward to Cyprus vanguard'' in the accession negotiations.

    Austrian National Council President wants a united Cyprus

    Nicosia, Oct 18 (CNA) President of the Austrian National Council Heinz Fischer said here today peace and security will only come when Cyprus is united and that European countries hope that this dream will become true.

    In a statement after visiting the Green Line, accompanied by Nicosia Mayor, Michalakis Zambelas, Fischer said he is optimistic that the division of Cyprus will end and that Cyprus will have a good common European future.

    Athens, Oct 18 (CNA) Efforts for a comprehensive settlement to the Cyprus problem, based on the relevant Security Council decisions are stalled due to Ankara and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktashs negative stance, said Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis after talks with visiting President of the Republic Glafcos Clerides here Friday.

    Greece and Cyprus will continue supporting the efforts of the Secretary-General for a solution within the framework of Security Council resolutions, Simitis said.

    Simitis reconfirmed that for Greece, the Cyprus problem remains the major and dominant issue, the national problem, which demands national unity and readiness. He also expressed unlimited support to the efforts of President Clerides to solve the Cyprus problem and the islands accession to the EU.

    Regarding Cyprus European Union accession course, the Greek Premier said it was confirmed that things, as they arise from the European Commissions report which justifies the extensive effort of the Greek and Cypriot governments, are progressing well and secure Cyprus European perspective.

    The Greek Premier announced a series of visits he will pay to European capitals before the Copenhagen European Council where the political decision for the enlargement of the EU will be taken.

    During the talks, the identical views of both governments on the procedure for a Cyprus settlement and the islands accession to the EU were reconfirmed.

    Simitis and Clerides covered in detail the latest developments on Cyprus, and the results of the meeting in New York earlier this month of the UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan with President Clerides and Rauf Denktash, the peace process and the completion of accession negotiations at the European Council in Copenhagen in December.

    On his part, President Clerides said he was pleased because we reached unanimous decisions on how we should handle the issues which we had prepared for discussion.

    Nicosia, Oct 18 (CNA) United Democrats deputy, Androulla Vassiliou, was elected Vice President of the European Liberal Democratic Reform Party (ELDR), which today completed its congress in the city of Bath in the UK.

    Vassiliou scored the highest number of votes from the other two vice-presidents from the UK and Denmark. The Congress, held between the 16-18 October, expressed full support to the EU enlargement process, a statement from the United Democrats said here Friday.
