Cyprus government to protest buzzing of CY plane

Nicosia, Nov 8 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government described today as unacceptable action the buzzing of a Cyprus Airways passenger plane yesterday by two Turkish warplanes.

[05] Decision to submit solution plan to be made in the next 24 hours

1820:CYPPRESS:05 Decision to submit solution plan to be made in the next 24 hours Nicosia, Nov 8 (CNA) A solution plan for Cyprus is expected to be submitted during next week, reliable sources said here Friday.

CNA has learned the decision to submit the plan or not will be taken in the next 24 hours and will be handed over to the two sides next week.

[06] Clerides prefers solution plan to be submitted after elections

1850:CYPPRESS:06 Clerides prefers solution plan to be submitted after elections Nicosia, Nov 8 (CNA) President of the Republic Glafcos Clerides said he would prefer any solution plan for Cyprus to be submitted by the UN after the February 2003 presidential elections.

Explaining the reason, Clerides said it would be more reasonable the issue is handled in a composed manner after the elections.

Speaking Thursday, Clerides remarked it would not be wise any plan by the UN Secretary-General to constitute an issue during the Presidential elections campaign.

Asked if he is optimistic there will be a Cyprus settlement, President Clerides said by nature he is optimistic, only to add that experience has taught him that optimism does not always bring the desired results.

Invited to comment on statements made on Cyprus by Turkeys election winner, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, leader of the Justice and Development Party (AKP), President Clerides said the only clear statement Erdogan has made is that he would like to see an improvement in Greco-Turkish relations.

[07] Spokesman says no change in Turkish policy

1950:CYPPRESS:07 Spokesman says no change in Turkish policy Nicosia, Nov 8 (CNA) The Government has said statements made by Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktashs advisor, Ergun Olgun do not constitute a change in the Turkish positions on Cyprus.

Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said if Olgun had limited himself in saying a solution is possible by December 12, obviously there would have been something worthwhile in his statements.

But when he reiterates the theory of two states and two sovereignties, I believe there has been no change in his positions, Papapetrou added.

[08] Eckhard: Annan close to a decision on plan, consults leaders

2015:CYPPRESS:08 Eckhard: Annan close to a decision on plan, consults leaders United Nations, Nov 8 (CNA) UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan is close to a decision whether he will submit a solution plan on Cyprus, his Spokesman, Fred Eckhard said here Friday.

He also confirmed that Annan has called various leaders yesterday and today to make up his mind but avoided revealing details.

Eckhard said, during his daily press briefing, that Annan met Thursday his Special Advisor, Alvaro de Soto and that he may talk to him again today.

I think he is very close to a decision, but as of this morning, that final decision still had not been made, Eckhard added.

The spokesman was not in a position to say when De Soto will be returning to Cyprus.

Eckhard replied positively to a question whether the Secretary-General had made phone calls to various leaders to make up his mind to submit the plan or not, just like he did with the Iraqi issue.

[09] Kasoulides: Turkey to heed the call and respect UN resolutions

2020:CYPPRESS:09 Kasoulides: Turkey to heed the call and respect UN resolutions By Demetris Apokis Washington, Nov 8 (CNA) Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides called upon Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot leadership to heed the call of the international community and respect UN Security Council resolutions and the High Level Agreements which provide for a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation and a state with a single sovereignty, a single citizenship and a single international personality.

In an article in the quarterly magazine The National Interest, devoted to American foreign policy and world politics, Kasoulides said the vision for Cyprus requires a departure from the passions of the past for the best interests of all people on the island, as well as for regional stability.

Entitled Enforcing all UN Resolutions: The Key to a Cyprus Settlement, Kasoulides article refers to the recent speeches of President George W. Bush and Secretary General Kofi Annan, delivered before the United Nations General Assembly in September.

He says Turkey, whose military continues to illegally occupy nearly forty percent of Cyprus since 1974, defies UN resolutions by demanding that the international community accept the ''realities'' of the status quo brought about by its aggression.

[10] Commission in touch with UN Chief on Cyprus solution plan

2040:CYPPRESS:10 Commission in touch with UN Chief on Cyprus solution plan By Nicos Bellos Brussels, Nov 8 (CNA) The European Commission is in constant touch with the UN Secretary-General and is informing him on the various aspects of the acquis communautaire, so that provisions of a solution plan are not contrary to the acquis communautaire.
