    United Nations, Apr 8 (CNA) -- The five permanent members of the UN Security Council began here Monday informal consultations about the contents of a draft resolution on the Cyprus peace process, expected to be issued after the Council meets on the matter on Thursday.

    Cyprus' accession to enhance ties with Iceland

    Nicosia, Apr 8 (CNA) -- Iceland President, Olafur Ragmar Grimsson, has expressed hope for a just and viable solution in Cyprus and said that the Republic's accession to the European Union will pave the way for enhanced bilateral relations.

    Grimsson outlined his views as he accepted the credentials of Cyprus' Ambassador to Iceland, Kostas Papademas, who is based in Stockholm, noting that relations between Reykjavik and Nicosia are excellent.

    Nicosia, Apr 8 (CNA) - House of Representatives President Demetris Christofias departs for Moscow tomorrow for a working visit, at the invitation of Russian Federation State Duma Chairman Gennadii Seleznev.

    During his stay in the Russian capital, Christofias will have separate meetings with Seleznev, Minister of Foreign Affairs Igor Ivanov and Chairman of the Communist Party Gennadii Zyuganov.

    Kofi Annan expresses ''profound regret'' over missed opportunity

    Nicosia, Apr 8 (CNA) -- UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has expressed profound regret that the people of Cyprus missed an opportunity to decide about their future, following the collapse last month of his latest attempt to bring about a negotiated settlement.

    In his 35-page report on the peace effort that started in 1999 and ended in March this year, Annan calls on the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot parties to adhere to his peace proposal ''as the finely wrought balance that it is.''

    Kofi Annan points out that Cyprus needs a solution sui generis.

    The report, released officially Monday, gives a very detailed outline of the meetings, consultations and contacts among interested parties, an effort which cost the UN an estimated 3,148.500 US dollars.

    Nicosia, Apr 8 (CNA) - Imports and exports in Cyprus recorded a decrease during the period January-October 2002, compared with the respective period in the year 2001, with the trade deficit reaching 1,603.9 million (mn) pounds in January-October 2002 compared to 1,605.3 mn pounds in the corresponding period of 2001.

    Total imports, covering imports for home consumption and imports placed into bonded warehouses, were 2,040 mn pounds in January-October 2002, compared with 2,143.6 mn pounds in the respective period in 2001.

    Brussels, Apr 8 (CNA) - Cyprus' Gross Domestic Product will increase by 2% in the year 2003 and by 3.8% in the year 2004, according to the spring estimates of the European Commission, which gave negative predictions for the whole European economy and all member states, as well as acceding and candidate countries.

    Regarding Cyprus, the Commission foresees that the GDP would increase by 2% instead of 3.5% as predicted in November 2002, while for the year 2004 estimates indicate a rise of 3.8% instead of 4.1%.

    Nicosia, Apr 8 (CNA) - The Union of Cypriot Journalists ''stigmatises as an atrocious war crime and barbaric attack against the freedom of press and the right to inform humanity, the bombing of 'Palestine' hotel in Baghdad, where hundreds of journalists and cameramen from all over the world are staying, and the offices off Al Jazeera and Abu Dhabi television stations in the Iraqi capital''.

    In a press release, the Union says that ''this criminal action resulted in the death and wounding of a number of journalists and cameramen''.
