    United Nations, Apr 11 (CNA) -- UN Secretary General's special adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto believes that the absence of a solution in Cyprus is probably due to ''failings of political will.''

    Briefing members of the Security Council, he said that it is difficult to see conditions for a solution as propitious as those that existed in the past three and a half years.

    Christofias pays one-day visit to Moscow

    Nicosia, Apr 11 (CNA) -- Cyprus House of Representatives President Demetris Christofias warned that if UN Secretary General's peace plan for Cyprus is incorporated in a UN Security Council resolution, as a solution to the Cyprus problem and not as the basis for negotiations this will allow Turkey to continue negotiations, insisting on her demand for dual sovereignty.

    Christofias, who paid yesterday a one-day working visit to Moscow at the invitation of Russian Federation State Duma Chairman Gennadii Seleznev, said there are many voids and inadequacies in the Annan plan that must be overcome and noted that the situation is not good as Britain and the US, are promoting, at Turkey's demand, the establishment of a confederation (two sovereign states) in Cyprus.

    Washington, Apr 11 (CNA) -- The US House of Representatives called Thursday on the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot leaders to quickly resume negotiations to settle the Cyprus problem.

    It also called on the governments of Turkey and Greece to do their utmost to support the search for a settlement.

    Nicosia, Apr 11 (CNA) -- Cyprus population has increased by 1% in the year 2001 reaching 793,100 compared with 2000, when it was estimated at 785,300.

    According to the 2002 Demographic Report released by the Republics Statistical Service, 639,400 or 80.7%, of the islands population consisted of Greek Cypriots, 87,600 or 11%, of Turkish Cypriots and 66,100 or 8.3% of foreign residents.

    Dissent among Council members due to differences on principles

    Nicosia, Apr 11 (CNA) -- Differences that have emerged among UN Security Council members with regard to a resolution on the Cyprus peace effort, in relation to Kofi Annan's peace proposal, are due to differences on matters of principle, Government Spokesman Kypros Chrisostomides said here today.

    The Spokesman reiterated that the government considers Kofi Annan's peace plan still on the negotiating table and stressed that it is ready for sincere negotiations on the basis of this plan to reach a settlement.

    Italy supports Cyprus' EU accession, Antonione says

    Nicosia, Apr 11 (CNA) - Italy's Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs Roberto Antonione expressed his country's satisfaction that Cyprus will become a member of the European Union, noting that Italy has always supported Cyprus' efforts to join the EU because it considers it a European country.

    Antonione was received here today by Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos, who analysed the positions of the Greek Cypriot side on the Cyprus problem before and after The Hague meeting and the intransigent position shown by the Turkish side in the negotiations, which led to the collapse of the UN Secretary-General's initiative for a Cyprus settlement.

    Nicosia, Apr 11 (CNA) - Argentina ratified once again its support to the UN Secretary-General's plan for a Cyprus settlement and hopes that the people the Cyprus will promptly achieve a just peace in a united island, the country's new Ambassador in Nicosia Atilio Borberto Molteni said while presenting his credentials to President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos.

    Receiving Molteni's credentials, President Papadopoulos expressed appreciation for Argentina's constant support for a workable and viable settlement of the Cyprus problem.
