    Washington, Sep 18 (CNA) -- Developments in the Cyprus problem and potentialities for its resolution as well as possible initiatives in this direction were among the issues discussed here yesterday between US Secretary of State Colin Powell and Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou.

    Weather forecast for Cyprus

    Nicosia, Sep 18 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Friday and Saturday: 19/09/2003 to 20/09/2003 -------------------------------------- The weather on Friday will be mainly fine with some temporal cloud. The wind will prevail southwest to west gentle to moderate 3 to 4 bf and the state of sea slight to moderate.

    The temperature will range from 28 degrees over the western and northern coastal areas to 30 over the southern and eastern coastal areas and to 32 inland while over the mountains will reach 23 degrees.

    During night the weather will be fine with light northwesterly winds. The state of sea will be slight. The minimum temperature will range from 12 over the mountains to 20 over the coastal areas.

    On Saturday the weather will be mainly fine but local cloud during afternoon will probably result in isolated showers mainly over the mountains. The wind will be southwest to west gentle to moderate 3 to 4 bf and the state of sea slight to moderate. The maximum temperature will remain without any significant change.

    Outlook for Sunday and Monday: 21/09/2003 to 22/09/2003 ------------------------------------------------ Local showers are likely on Sunday with the temperature is expected to decrease.

    On Monday the weather will be mainly fine while during afternoon local cloud over the mountains may result in an odd shower. The temperature is expected to increase.

    Cyprus FM to hold number of meetings in New York

    Nicosia, Sep 18 (CNA) -- Cyprus Foreign Minister George Iacovou will hold a series of meetings with his EU colleagues on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York next week.

    Iacovou will represent Cyprus at a meeting of the 15 EU-member states and the ten acceding countries that will take place there. He will also participate at a meeting of the 25 EU leaders with US Secretary of State Colin Powell and Russias Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov.

    In New York, the Foreign Minister will accompany President Tassos Papadopoulos during his official meetings within the framework of the General Assembly and during his bilateral contacts with heads of states and governments and meetings with overseas Cypriots living in New York.

    Iacovou will also hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts and represent Cyprus at a UN meeting on AIDS.

    Cyprus government welcomes EU position on so called agreement

    Nicosia, Sep 18 (CNA) -- Cyprus Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides described the European Commissions reaction regarding the so-called framework agreement for a customs union between Turkey and the illegal regime in the occupied north of Cyprus as completely right.

    Invited to comment on the Commissions position that the agreement does not comply with the provisions of the customs union between Turkey and the European Union and the fact that the Commission had asked Turkey to re-evaluate it, the Spokesman said the EU considers any agreement illegal, according to international law and UN resolutions, and believes it cannot possibly have any contents or validity.

    Egypt: Cyprus in the EU, a bridge between Europe and Arab world

    Nicosia, Sep 18 (CNA) -- Egypt welcomes the accession of Cyprus to the EU and considers it an asset, since the island will be the bridge of cooperation and understanding between Europe and the Arab world, new Ambassador of the Egypt to Cyprus, Mohamed Ibrahim Abdel Hakam, said here today, presenting his credentials to Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos.

    Referring to the Cyprus problem, Hakam said his country supports a solution based on the UN resolutions, which ''guarantee the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Cyprus and safeguard its unity to the benefit of its people and for the sake of peace and stability in the whole region''.

    Receiving the credentials President Papadopoulos said that ''the Turkish side not only refuses to negotiate in good faith, but also does not miss an opportunity to attempt to upgrade the illegal secessionist entity she set up in the occupied part of the Republic of Cyprus''.

    Cyprus President: We will resist Turkish aim to gain suzerainty over Cyprus

    Nicosia, Sep 18 (CNA) --- Despite the positive attitude of the Greek Cypriot side and the efforts of the UN to resolve the Cyprus problem, the Turkish side continues to be reluctant to cooperate in a constructive manner unless it gains suzerainty over Cyprus, Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos stressed here today, adding that Cyprus will ''resist by all means this Turkish aim''.

    Receiving today the credentials of Jordans new Ambassador Atef Halasa, who will be based in Athens, the President stressed that the Greek Cypriot side stands ready to work closely with the Secretary-General of the UN to solve the Cyprus problem, hoping that ''the Turkish side will finally show the necessary political will''.
