Christofias: UN should not accept Denktash's proposal on Varosha

Nicosia, Oct 1 (CNA) -- The United Nations should not accept a proposal by Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash for joint administration of the fenced area of the occupied town of Famagusta (Varosha), House President Demetris Christofias has said, noting that UN Security Council 550 resolution is binding for the UN.

Resolution 550 of 1984 said it considers any attempt to ''settle any part of Varosha (Famagusta) by people other than its inhabitants as inadmissible and calls for the transfer of this area to the administration of the UN.''

Speaking after a meeting with Greek Minister of National Defence Yiannos Papantoniou, Christofias said that ''the UN should and cannot'' accept Denktash's proposal for joint administration of Varosha.

He said Famagusta can only be handed back to its inhabitants in accordance with resolution 550, which provides for the transfer of the area's administration to the UN and the return of its legitimate inhabitants.
