    Mavronicolas: Turkey's EU accession depends on Cyprus solution

    Larnaca, Oct 6 (CNA) -- Turkey must get the messages sent by the EU and understand that its accession to the Union depends on the settlement of the Cyprus problem, Cyprus Defence Minister Kyriakos Mavronicolas has said, adding that provocative references by the Turkish military establishment ''do not create problem for us but for Turkey itself.''

    Nicosia, Oct 6 (CNA) -- The Union of Cyprus Journalists (UCJ) has expressed solidarity with two Turkish Cypriot journalists of the Turkish Cypriot daily ''Afrika'' whose lives had been threatened by members of the extremist ''Grey Wolves'' organisation in Cyprus' Turkish-occupied territory.

    Political parties and other institutions, mayors, journalists and other citizens attended a rally here yesterday, denouncing threats against Sener Levent and Ali Osman.

    Nicosia, Oct 6 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Tuesday and Wednesday: 07/10/2003 to 08/10/2003

    Mainly fine weather with local cloud during afternoon. Generally light southwesterly wind and slight sea. Temperature will range from 16 to 33 degrees inland, from 18 to 30 over coastline and from 15 to 24 over Prodromos area.

    Outlook for Thursday and Friday: 09/10/2003 to 10/10/2003

    Local showers are expected over Thursday and Friday with moderate southwesterly wind. Temperature will decrease.

    Nicosia, Oct 6 (CNA) - Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende arrived in Cyprus tonight, saying that the official visits to new EU members were part of a tour in view of his country taking over the rotating EU presidency during the second half of 2004.

    Balkenende said that during the talks he will be having tomorrow with Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos, he will listen to the government's comments on developments in Europe.
