    US wants Cyprus problem solved as soon as possible

    Athens, Oct 23 (CNA) -- US State Department's Special Coordinator for Cyprus, Ambassador Thomas Weston, has reiterated that his country would like to see the Cyprus question solved as soon as possible.

    Weston had meetings here yesterday on the Cyprus question with Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou and opposition New Democracy Party Costas Karamanlis.

    ''All those meetings were very much in the tradition of great cooperation on the Cyprus issue. We exchange views about where we are. I recorded some of the things, which I have learned and experienced in Ankara'', Weston told to the press, adding that he is very happy ''about the solidity of cooperation we have on the Cyprus issue''.

    Athens, Oct 23 (CNA) -- The message from the so-called elections, scheduled for 14 December 2003 in the Turkish-occupied northern part of Cyprus is very important for Cyprus, for the Turkish Cypriots and Turkey as well, Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou has stated.

    Speaking to the press after a meeting here last nigth with US State Department's Special Coordinator for Cyprus, Ambassador Thomas Weston, said the US is on hold in view of possible developments, which would possibly follow the ''elections''.

    Nicosia, Oct 23 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Friday and Saturday: 24/10/2003 to 25/10/2003 -------------------------------------- The weather on Friday and Saturday will be mainly fine, while mainly high cloud will occur. Some temporal lower cloud will occur inland during afternoon.

    The wind over night will be northwest to northeast light less than 3 bf gradually veering to northeast to southeast 2 to 3 bf during morning and by midday is expected to be southwest to west generally light of moderate 3 to 4 bf.

    The state of sea will be smooth to slight during night time and generally slight during afternoon.

    The temperature will range inland from 15 to 34, over the coastal areas from 16 to 30, and over the mountains from 16 to 27 degrees.

    Outlook for Sunday and Monday: 26/10/2003 to 27/10/2003 ------------------------------------------------ The weather on Sunday will be mainly fine with temporal cloud. The temperature will remain without any significant change.

    On Monday, the weather is expected to be partly cloudy with probable showers and the temperature will note a decrease.

    United Nations, Oct 23 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government has strongly protested to the United Nations against repeated violations of Cyprus' airspace and Nicosia FIR by Turkish military aircraft during August, September and October 2003.

    The protest is included in a letter dated 10 October from Cyprus' Permanent Representative to the United Nations Andreas Mavroyianis addressed to the UN Secretary-General. The letter will be circulated as a document of the General Assembly and teh Security Council.

    The Cyprus government drew the UN chief's attention "to new violations of the flight information region (FIR) of Nicosia and the national airspace of the Republic of Cyprus by military aircraft of the Turkish Air Force recorded on 25, 27 and 28 August; on 4, 18 and 23 September; and on 6 and 7 October 2003."

    The ambassador said in his letter "on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Cyprus, I strongly protest all the above-mentioned violations of the Nicosia FIR and the national airspace of the Republic of Cyprus, which are contrary to international law as well as to Security Council resolutions on Cyprus.

    We sincerely hope that the Government of Turkey, taking into consideration its international obligations, will refrain from further violations, respect the sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus and contribute substantively to the efforts for a just and functional solution to the Cyprus problem, on the basis of United Nations resolutions," the Cypriot diplomat added.

    Nicosia, Oct 23 (CNA) -- EU Commissioner for Rural Policy and Institutional Reform Michel Barnier has expressed hope that the Cyprus problem will be solved, so that the whole island would use for its best benefit the EU cohesion funds.

    British calls on Turkish side to abandon ''rejectionist'' stance on Cyprus

    London, Oct 23 (CNA) British Minister for Europe Denis MacShane stressed that Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos accepts the Annan ðlan as a basis for negotiations, but statements made by Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash suggest he rejects it.

    In a written answer to a question in Parliament by Labour MP Harold Best, MacShane said the best way forward would be for the parties to re-engage on the basis of the detailed settlement proposals presented by the UN SG, adding that the Annan Plan is balanced, practicable and compatible with the EU acquis.

    MacShane said President Papadopoulos has affirmed that he is ready to negotiate on this basis, adding that Denktashs latest statements, however, suggest that he is opposed not only to the Annan Plan but also to the UN Secretary Generals Good Offices.

    United Nations, Oct 23 (CNA) Cyprus is firmly opposed to the reproductive cloning of human beings, pledged Andreas Jacovides, Representative of the Republic of Cyprus to the Sixth (Legal) Committee of the 58th Session of the UN General Assembly.

    In a speech on Tuesday on the issue International Convention against the Reproductive Cloning of Human Beings, Jacovides reminded that Cyprus has adopted binding legislation at a national level, implementing the 1998 First Additional Protocol to the European Convention on Biomedicine, which prohibits the cloning of human beings for reproductive purposes.

    Weston begins contacts in Cyprus with optimism

    Nicosia, Oct 23 (CNA) US State Department Special Coordinator for Cyprus Thomas Weston said he had a very good start to his meetings on the island here Thursday.

    Weston was speaking after a lengthy meeting with Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos, noting they had a very good meeting and we got a very good start.

    He referred journalists to his press conference on Friday while when asked about the existence of observers to monitor the so-called elections in the Turkish occupied areas he said I have to collect a little more information before I answer that.

    On his part, Foreign Minister Georgios Iacovou, who also met Weston this morning, said the US diplomat raised the issue of observers during his meeting with Papadopoulos.

    Iacovou said he informed Weston on the governments contacts with officials who lately visited Ankara and had conveyed their impressions from the Turkish politicians on the Turkish policy on Cyprus.

    Asked if the US diplomat is bringing anything different from Ankara, Iacovou said I do not think he has different impressions but his contacts allow him to offer different interpretations from the ones others have conveyed to us.

    Nicosia, Oct 23 (CNA) France and Cyprus will work through their accession in the European Union to enhance bilateral cooperation, pledged here Frances new ambassador to the island Hadelin de La Tour-Du-Pin.

    Presenting his credentials to Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos, de La Tour-Du-Pin said the two countries longstanding corporation will be furthered as they will join in a common endeavour, the building of a new European Union.

    Regarding the Cyprus problem, he said ''France, like the European Union and its member states, wants a global, fair and sustainable solution to this long-lasting conflict and strongly hopes that the year 2004 will see real progress towards the reunification of Cyprus on the basis of the UN settlement plan.''

    Nicosia, Oct 23 (CNA) EU Commissioner for Rural Policy and Institutional Reform Michel Barnier said a united Cyprus entering the European Union will benefit the island, thus allowing cohesion funds to be released to the island to benefit both communities, especially the Turkish Cypriots.

    Addressing a gathering at the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry, he said Cyprus has not reached its final destination in Europe noting you are at the beginning, expressing the hope that when a united Cyprus enters the EU, you will be able to defend your culture and identity and not give it up.

    Earlier Thursday Barnier officially opened the restored Omeriye Bath, in the old part of Nicosia, which is part of the Partnership for the Future programme funded by the EU through the United Nations Development Programme and implemented by the UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS).
