    President Papadopoulos holds talks with Greek Premier

    Larnaca, Jan 19 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos holds talks today in Athens on developments in the Cyprus problem with Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis.

    He will also have meetings with Greek President Constantinos Stephanopoulos and leaders of New Democracy Costas Karamanlis, Left and Progress Coalition Nicos Constantopoulos and Greek Communist Party General Secretary Aleca Papariga.

    Speaking in Larnaca before departing yesterday for the Greek capital, President Papadopoulos said, replying to questions, that the Greek Cypriot side will consider it as a serious problem if the USA is involved in negotiations for a Cyprus settlement as an observer.

    The Cypriot President said negotiations are held under the UN Secretary General's auspices and those concerned and engaged in them are already determined.

    Cypriots, Maltese to enjoy free movement of labour in Finland

    Brussels, Jan 19 (CNA) -- The citizens of Cyprus and Malta will enjoy free movement of labour in Finland as of May 1, 2004, according to a bill on the introduction of a transition period for the free movement of labour adopted by the Finish government.

    The bill concerns the countries joining the European Union, except Cyprus and Malta. The prerequisite for getting a job in Finland without a work permit would be that there are no workers in the labour market, available for a vacancy, according to the descretion of the employment office. The Act will enter into force at the beginning of May, remaining in force for two years.

    Athens, Jan 19 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos holds here today consultations with Greek Premier Costas Simitis, to coordinate their response to future developments in the UN-led effort to find a negotiated settlement in Cyprus.

    Their meeting, also attended by Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou, Greek Alternate Foreign Minister Tasos Yiannitsis, Greek Ambassador to Cyprus Christos Panagopoulos, Cyprus Foreign Minister Georgios Iacovou, Cyprus Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides, the Director of Papadopoulos' Diplomatic Office, Ambassador Tasos Tzionis and Cyprus Ambassador to Greece Leonidas Pantelides, started at 1200 local time.

    Athens, Jan 19 (CNA) Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis said there should be an agreement on Cyprus after negotiations are held for a settlement followed by a referendum.

    In statements after talks today with Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos in the Greek capital, Prime Minister Simitis said it is inconceivable to Turkeys accession course without a solution to the Cyprus problem, adding that Ankara must practically show its willingness to cooperate for a solution.

    In his statements, President Papadopoulos expressed his gratitude to Greece and referred to the significance which it attaches to the Cyprus problem.

    The Greek Premier described the 75-minute meeting as especially useful where prospects to resume the peace negotiations were examined as well as the islands EU accession course, the case of Titina Loizidou and the missing persons issue.

    He said Cyprus and Greece reconfirmed that the UN procedure is determining and underlined the need for a viable, just and functional solution which will comply with the acquis communautaire.

    Athens, Jan 19 (CNA) - Greece and Cyprus reconfirmed their willingness to resume talks based on a twice-revised solution plan proposed by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and stressed that the Turkish side must first clarify its positions.

    In statements during a press conference at the end of their talks in Athens, Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis and Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos noted that there must be an agreement on Cyprus before the two sides go to a referendum.

    Asked whether there should be a commitment to hold a referendum without first reaching an agreement, Premier Simitis replied, ''If we do not agree with the result of the negotiations, then this presumed result will not become acceptable by the Greek Cypriot side in any referendum. We have repeatedly said that we need an agreement to proceed to a referendum''.
