Washington, Feb 3 (CNA) -- UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has expressed hope that he will be able to call for the resumption of Cyprus peace talks shortly.

Speaking here after his meeting and lunch with US President George Bush, Annan said that after his consultations last week with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos, the Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis and the Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou and even though he has not yet spoken to Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash ''everyone seems ready to resume'' talks.

US urges all sides to finalise a settlement and submit it to refenda

    by Demetris Apokis

Washington, Feb 3 (CNA) -- The US urges all parties, Cyprus, Greece and Turkey to agree to finalize a Cyprus settlement, allow the Secretary General to resolve outstanding issues and submit the settlement to referenda by a date certain, White House spokesman Scot Maclelan told his briefing today after the meeting US President George Bush and UN Secretary General Kofi Annan had in the Oval Office.

Maclelan said Bush and Annan touched on the Cyprus problem very briefly at their initial meeting in the Oval Office. He also said he expected that this may be an issue which will come up more in the lunch they attended after the meeting.

The White House spokesman also said the US welcomes ''the sincere willingness to advance a Cyprus settlement on the basis of Secretary Generals formula that the Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan made to us during his visit last week.''
