UN on Cyprus peace talks: Anything is possible

    by Apostolis Zoupaniotis

United Nations, Feb 11 (CNA) -- The UN believes that anything is possible with regard to the Cyprus peace talks and would not rule out the possibility of seeing the Cyprus peace talks, currently underway in New York, continue at the UN seat, Spokesman Fred Eckhard has indicated.

Speaking at his daily noon briefing, the Spokesman appeared cautious as to the outcome of today's meeting between the Secretary General, Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, pointing out that ''anything is possible.''

Powell active towards all interested parties in Cyprus

    by Demetris Apokis

Washington, Feb 11 (CNA) -- The UN have asked the US to intervene in the direction of Turkey and Greece with a view at making headway in the latest effort of the Secretary General to find a negotiated settlement before Cyprus joins the European Union on May 1, according to a State Department official.

The US, the official said, continues to urge all sides to do everything possible to support the good offices mission of the Secretary General to settle the question of Cyprus and achieve the accession of a united Cyprus to the EU.

The official said that Secretary of State Colin Powell is active in the direction of all parties involved in the promotion of a Cyprus settlement.
