    Annan says as long as parties talk there is progress

    United Nations, Feb 12 (CNA) -- UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan has said that as long as the Cyprus parties are talking, there is progress.

    Asked by CNA whether the peace talks being held in New York are progressing positively, Annan replied they are talking, and as long as they are talking we are making progress.

    United Nations, Feb 12 (CNA) -- Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos said if the UN Secretary-General decides to convene talks on the basis of the proposals that the two sides have submitted, means that he (Kofi Annan) believes there is a possibility for achieving a solution.

    This will become evident during the third meeting later Thursday, President Papadopoulos added.

    Washington, Feb 12 (CNA) -- The US has reiterated its encouragement to do everything possible to support the mission of good offices of UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, said State Department's Deputy Spokesman Adam Ereli.

    He told reporters that Secretary of State Colin Powell has spoken yesterday about Cyprus with Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul, Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou and UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

    Nicosia, Feb 12 (CNA) - The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Friday and Saturday: 13/02/2004 to 14/02/2004 -------------------- On Friday, the weather will be cloudy with showers, isolated thunderstorms, and snowfall over the mountains.

    Wind will blow from the south, fresh to strong and locally near gale, 5-6BF locally 7BF.

    The sea will be rough and locally very rough.

    Temperatures will reach 14C inland, 16C on the coast and 3C over the Prodromos area.

    On Saturday, local showers are expected with temperatures feeling very cold in the fresh to strong Northwesterly breeze at 5-6BF

    Snowfall is going to continue over the mountains and it is expected to extend to lower ground at about 1000ft.

    The sea will remain rough to very rough.

    Outlook for Sunday and Monday: 15/02/2004 to 16/02/2004 ----------------------------- On Sunday, the weather will continue to feel cold. A few isolated showers are expected with some snow over the high mountains and possibly extending to lower ground at about 3000ft.

    Monday will be partly cloudy with the possibility of local showers and snow in the Troodos mountains.

    Temperature will rise.

    Brussels, Feb 12 (CNA) -- President of the European Parliament Pat Cox appealed today to the President of the Republic of Cyprus Tassos Papadopoulos to work for a successful outcome in the resumed peace talks, currently underway in New York.

    The appeal came as Papadopoulos prepares to meet for the third time in as many days with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, following an invitation by Annan to the two leaders to try and resume the stalled peace talks.
