    Cypriot parties express hope for functional settlement

    Nicosia, Mar 17 (CNA) -- The Greek Cypriot Environmentalist Movement and the Turkish Cypriot Peace and Democracy Movement have expressed hope for the achievement of a workable solution to the Cyprus problem.

    Speaking after a meeting yesterday between delegations of the two parties, General Secretary of the Environmentalist Movement Giorgos Perdikis said that the document given to the two sides in Cyprus by the UN chief's Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto ''is mutilation of the talks and virtually the positions of the two sides are mutilated''.

    Cyprus President meets UN Undersecretary General

    Nicosia, Mar 17 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos met today with UN Undersecretary General for Political Affairs Sir Kieran Prendergast to discuss developments in the UN-led process aiming to reach a settlement of the Cyprus problem by May 1st.

    Prendergast, who was accompanied by UN Secretary-General's special adviser for Cyprus Alvaro de Soto, refrained from making any statements after the meeting, noting that whatever he has to say he will say it at the airport tomorrow, upon his departure.

    Invited to say if the Greek Cypriot side has given its answer to the document handed over to the two sides by De Soto, President Papadopoulos said ''there is no answer. We will discuss the document.''

    Nicosia, Mar 17 (CNA) - UN Under Secretary General for Political Affairs Sir Kieran Prendergast met here today with House President Demetris Christofias and exchanged views with him on the course of UN-led negotiations aimed at reuniting Cyprus.

    Speaking after the meeting, Christofias said he conveyed to the UN official the messages of the Greek Cypriot side and asked that they be communicated to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.

    Nicosia, Mar 17 (CNA) - Secretary for Foreign Affairs of the Turkish Cypriot United Cyprus Party Ozker Ozgur said today that the Cyprus problem should be solved by the Cypriots themselves by May 1st, when the island will officially join the EU, noting there was no doubt that if third parties solved it for them, then it would be ''in their own interests''.

    Nicosia, Mar 17 (CNA) --- The solution of the Cyprus problem should guarantee the functionality of the state and include no unacceptable permanent derogations from the acquis communautaire, co-chairpersons of the Joint Cyprus - EU Parliamentary Committee Nicos Cleanthous and Mechtild Rothe stressed today.

    JPC: Turkey's EU course unimaginable without a Cyprus settlement

    Nicosia, Mar 17 (CNA) -- European Union and Cyprus Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) warned today Turkey that the absence of a Cyprus settlement could hinder its European aspirations, urging at the same time Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash to fully engage in the UN-led talks aiming at reaching a settlement before May 1, when Cyprus becomes an EU member.

    ''Failure to resolve the Cyprus problem will pose a serious obstacle to Turkey's European ambitions,'' said the JPC, which wrapped up today its last meeting, in its final recommendation.
