Chief Returning Officer rejects EDEK request for recount

Nicosia, Jun 14 (CNA) -- The Chief Returning Officer Lazaros Savvides said a request by the Movement of Social Democrats EDEK for a recount of the votes in all districts for the European Elections in Cyprus was not possible.

He told reporters after announcing the official results of the elections that after examining all issues, he had reached to the decision that it was not possible to go ahead with EDEK leader Yiannakis Omirous request.

He said in the event Omirou disagreed he could resort to the electoral court, according to the provisions of the existing legislation.

EDEK legal expert Maria Thrasivoulou told reporters that the movement was seeking a recount because of the irregularities which were reported by the movements representatives at polling stations.

In his letter to Savvides, EDEK leader Omirou had said the recount was imperative because EDEK had received a number of reports for irregularities and indiscretions during the voting as well as mistakes during the election procedure and counting of votes.

In view of the above and mainly because of the marginal and surely unsafe result, I call on you not to proceed with the declaration of the winners before the recount procedure is completed, Omirou had said in his letter.

EDEK did not get a seat at the European Parliament during Sunday's elections in Cyprus.

AKEL disappointed over Euro election results

Nicosia, Jun 14 (CNA) -- Cyprus' leftwing AKEL General Secretary Demetris Christofias said he was surprised and disappointed because his party dropped to second position during Sundays European elections and talked about a weakness in AKEL.

He said the reasons which led to this result will be analysed and the leadership will not fail to undertake its share of responsibilities.

I do not want to cover up AKELs weakness or the surprise we all felt during these hours with the result announced because no one had expected such a result, said Christofias as supporters thronged the partys headquarters.

AKEL, a government partner, secured two seats in the Euro Parliament but its percentage was down to 27.89% while the opposition Democratic Rally moved up to 28.23%.

"This result obviously does not satisfy us, said Christofias, who is also President of the House of Representatives, noting that we must contemplate on the possible reasons which contributed to the decrease of AKELs percentage.

Christofias said from what it seems, the percentage which AKEL lost went to socialist EDEK and a part to the centre-right Democratic Party, also government partners.
