    Cyprus Agriculture minister leaves for Maastricht and Brussels

    Nicosia, Jul 16 (CNA) -- Cyprus Agriculture, Natural Resources and the Environment Minister Efthymios Efthymiou left today for Maastricht to take part in an informal EU Environment Council between 16-18 July.

    European ministers will examine measures which member-states will take in order to promote environment friendly technology and discuss benefits from the use of this technology not only to the environment and the public health but also to the economy.

    EU environment ministers will also examine the issue of floods and ways to handle them.

    New York, Jul 16 (CNA) -- The Cyprus - US Chamber of Commerce held July 14 its Annual Meeting during which it elected a new Board of Directors and Executive Officers.

    The Board is made up of Andreas D. Comodromos (Chairman), Peter Kakoyiannis (Executive Committee President), George Prepis (Vice President), Nicholas Karacostas (Secretary), George Sophocleous (Assistant Secretary), Marios Ioannou (Treasurer), Nicos Paphites (Assistant Treasurer), Costa Kensington (Legal Counsel), Despina Axiotakis (Executive Director).

    Other Board Members are: Philip Christopher, Dennis Droushiotis, Renos Georgiou, Charis Lapas, Nicos Mouyiaris, Peter Papanicolaou,

    Cyprus government proposes CBM to boost security

    Nicosia, Jul 16 (CNA) The Cyprus government announced today a series of Confidence Building Measures (CBM) aimed to develop a sense of security among Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, within its policy for the Turkish Cypriots.

    Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides told a press conference that the measures deal with the opening of additional crossing points along the ceasefire line, demining (although the Greek Cypriot side has unilaterally begun the process for National Guard mines within the buffer zone) and the disengagement of military forces from the walled part of the capital Nicosia and from the wider Dherynia Famagusta and Strovilia areas, in eastern Cyprus.

    The proposals also include the restriction of military exercises at the level of a mechanised company and a squadron of medium range tanks and above at a distance of two kilometers from both ceasefire lines.

    Government proposes CBM to boost security among both communities

    Nicosia, Jul 16 (CNA) The Cyprus government announced today a series of Military Confidence Building Measures aimed to develop a sense of security among Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.

    The government proposes the opening of eight additional crossing points along the ceasefire line, disengagement of military forces from the walled part of the capital Nicosia and from the wider Dherinia Famagusta and Strovilia areas, in eastern Cyprus, demining of landmines by both sides, return of the fenced area of Famagusta to its lawful owners, common operation of the Famagusta port and restriction of military exercises.

    Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides told a press conference today that ''the government is convinced that these initiatives create the necessary basis for the creation of conditions of security and trust among Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots'', adding that the proposals are submitted to the European Commission.
