Cyprus President hopes international law will prevail

Larnaca, Aug 20 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos has expressed the hope that the international law will prevail as regards the Turkish efforts to exercise pressure on the European Union for the realisation of promises allegedly given by the Union.

Speaking upon his return last night from Athens where he watched the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, the Cyprus President noted that the European Union functions on the basis of laws and regulations and the European Law, adding that the Cyprus Republic has already expressed its positions on this matter.

He was commenting on statements that specific developments are soon expected in the EU - made after a meeting yestreday in Ankara between Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul and self-styled prime minister and foreign minister of the Turkish-occupied areas of Cyprus, Mehmet Ali Talat and Serdar Denktash.

The Cypriot President said the government held a series of meetings in view of the September 3 COREPER meeting (permanent representatives of EU states) which will examine EU regulations on assistance for the Turkish Cypriots, noting that during the meeting Cyprus will again have the opportunity to elaborate its own proposals.

He said during his stay in Athens he had the opportunity to discuss the Cyprus issue during meetings with the Greece's President Costis Stefanopoulos, Premier Costas Karamanlis, and Foreign Minister Petros Molybiatis, as well as with other heads of states, including British Premier Tony Blair, who happened to sit close to him at the ceremony of the signing of the Olympic Truce.

President Papadopoulos said his agenda includes seven official visits until the end of October, within the framework of the Greek Cypriot side's effort to inform on the Cyprus issue and EU matters.
