    Cyprus President winds up visit to Estonia

    Tallin, Oct 14 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos concludes here today an official visit to Estonia and returns to Cyprus tonight.

    This morning he will visit Riigikogu where he will be meeting Speaker Ene Ergma and other officials of the Parliament of Estonia.

    New European Commission President to visit Cyprus

    Nicosia, Oct 14 (CNA) -- European Commission President designate Jose Manuel Barroso arrives here tonight for a short visit.

    Tomorrow morning at 1000 local time (0700 GMT) Barroso will have a meeting at the Presidential Palace with Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos, who returns tonight from officials visits to Finland and Estonia.

    At 1015 Papadopoulos and Barroso will head official talks between their delegations.

    The Cypriot delegation will comprise Foreign Minister George Iacovou, Director of the President's Diplomatic Office, Ambassador Tassos Tzionis and Permanent Representative to the EU, Ambassador Nicolas Emiliou.

    Head of the European Commission in Cyprus Andriaan van der Meer and member of the Transition Team Jonas Condomines Beraud will attend the talks on behalf of the EU.

    At 1145 Papadopoulos and Barroso will make statements to the press.

    Tallin, Oct 14 (CNA) -- The Greek Cypriot side considers it inconceivable for the Cyprus problem to become a non issue in the relations between Turkey and the European Union, Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos has stated.

    Speaking at a dinner in Tallinn, given in his honour by his Estonian counterpart Arnold Ruutel, President Papadopoulos said that for the Government of Cyprus, the end of the road as regards the efforts to reach a Cyprus settlement ''will come when the reunification of our country and our people is achieved''.

    United Nations, Oct 14 (CNA) -- Cyprus believes that the effort underway to reform the UN Security Council must be a comprehensive and far-sighted one, Cyprus Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Andreas Mavroyiannis, has said addressing a joint debate of the 59th session of the General Assembly on the Report of the Security Council and the question of equitable representation and increase in the membership of the Security Council and related matters.

    Nicosia, Oct 14 (CNA) -- The US believes that unless the Greek Cypriot side puts forward some ideas on the next steps towards a fresh effort for a political settlement in Cyprus, it will be highly unlikely to make any headway towards a solution, according to US Ambassador in Nicosia Michael Klosson.

    Paphos, Oct 14 (CNA) --- The Municipality of Geroskipou, situated three kilometres east of the island's western town of Paphos, organises this year for the first time the ''Day of Delights'', during which, an effort will be made to produce the biggest delight in the world, that would take a place in the Guinness Book of Records.

    Weather forecast for Cyprus Nicosia, Oct 14 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus: Friday and Saturday: 15/10/2004 to 16/10/2004 ------------------------------------------- On Friday, skies will be mainly clear initially, with some temporal cloud. In the afternoon there will be increase cloud in some areas which may bring some rain, especially over the Troodos mountains. On Saturday mainly fine weather is expected. Light variable breezes are expected in the morning and light to moderate southwesterly to northwesterly breezes in the afternoon. The sea state will be slight during the day and smooth to slight late in the evening and early in the morning. Maximum temperatures will be around 31C inland, 29C over the south coast, 27C over the west coast and 21C over Prodromos. Minimum temperatures will be around 16C inland, 18C over the coast and 12C over Prodromos. Outlook for Sunday and Monday: 17/10/2004 to 18/10/2004 ----------------------------------------------------- The weather will be mainly fine with a slight increase in temperatures.

    Nicosia, Oct 14 (CNA) - Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said today that the position of President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos was that Cyprus did not wish to veto the commencement of Turkey's EU accession negotiations, as long as the fundamental interests of Cyprus were safeguarded.

    Nicosia, Oct 14 (CNA) - Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said today that there have been no ''painful compromises'' by the Turkish side in efforts to solve the Cyprus problem.

    Commenting on remarks US Ambassador to Cyprus Michael Klosson made while addressing the annual general meeting of the Cyprus-American Business Association last night, that ''continued Turkish Cypriot acceptance of painful compromises incorporated in the Annan Plan should not be taken for granted,'' Chrysostomides clarified that it was ''the Greek Cypriot side that has been making painful compromises since 1977, by accepting the bizonal, bicommunal federation.''
