    Semi-government sector to go on 24-hour strike

    Nicosia, Jan 7 (CNA) -- A total of 9.200 employees at 21 semi-government organizations will go on a 24-hour warning strike on Monday following a deadlock in negotiations to renew the collective agreements between them and the government.

    The trade unions, representing workers at these organizations, have called their members to participate in Monday's strike by picketing outside their offices and to go on an indefinite strike as of 20 January.

    Brussels, Jan 7 (CNA) -- The vice-president of the socialist group in the European Parliament, responsible for ''a wider Europe'', Jan Marinus Wiersma and the Cyprus expert and rapporteur on the financial package for north Cyprus Mechtild Rothe have called for the allocation of EU aid to the Turkish Cypriots.

    Government issues instructions about clearing of mines

    Nicosia, Jan 7 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government issued today instructions to the public with regard to clearing of mines that continues on Monday within the UN-controlled buffer zone, near built-up areas.

    Mick Raine, director of the demining programme, said clearing of mines will take place Monday to Friday from 0700 until 1430 and controlled explosions to destroy the landmines will take place in early afternoon on each day, either on site or elsewhere if the mines can be transported.
