    Cyprus President in Hungary for official visit

    Budapest, Feb 7 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos begins a series of meetings today in Hungary, where he arrived last night for a two-day official visit, at the invitation of his Hungarian counterpart Ferenc Madl.

    In statements before his departure on Sunday at Larnaca Airport, President Papadopoulos said the aim of his visit to Hungary is to further enhance economic and commercial relations with EU member states.

    He described Hungary as "a very important EU member state and friendly to Cyprus", noting that the visit is taking place in the framework of contacts with EU member states.

    Larnaca, Feb 7 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadooulos has called on Turkish Cypriot self-styled premier Mehmet Ali Talat to allow trade to the island's northern Turkish-occupied areas, pointing out that the government has already made many concessions with regard to trade regulations.

    Nicosia, Feb 7 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos has stressed that the positions of the Greek Cypriot side on the question of Cyprus are put forward by the government and the President of the Republic.

    ''The leader of the Democratic Rally party, Nicos Anastasiades, can air the views of his own party during his forthcoming visit to Turkey,'' Papadopoulos said, expressing hope that these would be in line with the convergence of views expressed at the National Council, the top advisory body to the President on the handling of the Cyprus issue.

    Rise in political asylum applications causes problems, says President

    Larnaca, Feb 7 (CNA) -- The increasing number of applications for political asylum in the past three years is causing problems, Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos has said, noting that between six and eight thousand applications are filed on an annual basis as opposed to 10-12 applications.

    ''This is a serious problem faced not only by Cyprus but by other countries too. As a matter of principle, we do not want to create concentration or detention camps, we have a bitter experience of such camps,'' Papadopoulos said, referring to camps set up by the British during the anti-colonial struggle, in mid 1950s.

    Hungarian President: Turkey to meet European conditions

    Budapest, Feb 7 (CNA) -- Hungarian President Ferenc Madl has expressed his support to Cyprus' efforts for reunification.

    Speaking at a press conference after talks with his Cypriot counterpart Tassos Papadopoulos he said that Hungary supports Turkey's European perspective but Ankara has to meet the conditions put forward by the European Council, including the recognition of the Cyprus Republic.

    The Cypriot President noted that they discussed the further enhancement of political, cultural, economic and commercial relations between the two countries, members of the European Union.

    He added that the Cyprus problem was discussed among many issues and that he briefed his Hungarian counterpart over the positions of the Greek Cypriot side and the goal for a just and viable solution.

    Peresident Papadopoulos thanked Hungary for its contribution to the UN Peace Keeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP).

    Budapest, Feb 7 (CNA) -- Hungarian President Ferenc Madl praised today the efforts made by the Republic of Cyprus to reunify the island and stressed that his country supports these efforts.

    Madl also said that Hungary supports Turkey's European bid but noted that Ankara has to meet the conditions set by the December 2004 European Council, ''one of which is the recognition of the Republic of Cyprus by Turkey''

    The Hungarian President was speaking at a press conference after talks with his Cypriot counterpart Tassos Papadopoulos, who is paying a three-day official visit to Hungary.

    Hungary supports peaceful reunification of Cyprus

    Budapest, Feb 7 (CNA) - Hungary supports the peaceful procedure to reunite Cyprus as well as the common effort of Cyprus and Europe for Turkey to sign the protocol extending its customs union agreement with the EU, thus de facto recognising the Republic of Cyprus, Hungary's Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany said today, after talks with Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos.

    Speaking through an interpreter, Gyurcsany said it would be a long time before a solution was found, by which the Turkish troops would withdraw from the island, but noted that the aim in the near future should be to secure the international legal recognition of the Republic of Cyprus.

    In his statements, President Papadopoulos extended an invitation to Gyurcsany to visit Cyprus, which was accepted.
