    Athens, Mar 9 (CNA) -- Turkey must uphold the commitments it undertook at the European Council of 17 December 2004, Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis has said, stressing that the EU is not willing to alter the stance it so festively had undertaken.

    Brussels, Mar 9 (CNA) -- The Economic and Financial Affairs Council ECO-FIN praised Cyprus for its convergence programme, describing it as aspiring but plausible towards its aims to restore the deficit below three percent of the Gross Domestic Product.

    During Tuesdays meeting in Brussels, where Finance Minister Makis Keravnos represented Cyprus, the discussion was favourable following the announcement that the island's public deficit fell to 4.2% against the original aim, which was 4.8%.

    Cyprus government does not rule out meeting with Talat under UN auspices

    Nicosia, Mar 9 (CNA) -- The government does not rule out a meeting between Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos and Turkish Cypriot Republican Turkish Party (RTP) leader Mehmet Ali Talat on bicommunal issues under the auspices of the UN and the Secretary-Generals mission of good offices.

    Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said President Papadopoulos was informed by President of the House of Representatives and AKEL General Secretary Demetris Christofias on his meeting yesterday with Talat in the Turkish-occupied part of Nicosia.
