Greek Premier: Resumption of talks with no arbitration or tight timeframes

    by Christa Nicolaou

Athens, May 13 (CNA) ---- Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis reiterated today his country's support to the resumption of negotiations for the Cyprus question between both communities in the island, under the UN auspices, with no UN arbitration role or tight timeframes.

''The Greek government aims to reach a functional and viable settlement after negotiations, on the basis of UN Security Council decisions, the Annan plan and the EU principles'', Karamanlis stressed during a speech at the Greek Parliament.

''Our aim is to achieve a functional solution. A solution that is not functional will not be viable either. A non - viable solution is no solution. For this reason we are in constant contact and close cooperation with the President of the Republic of Cyprus, the government and the political leadership of Cyprus'' he said.
