    Discussions on Cyprus continue at the UN

    United Nations, May 19 (CNA) -- Discussions here between a Cypriot delegation, under Cyprus Presidential envoy Ambassador Tasos Tzionis, and UN Under Secretary General for political affairs Sir Kieran Prendergast will continue Thursday with an exchange of views on the substance of the Cyprus problem.

    Wednesday's meeting between the two sides lasted an hour. No statement was made on the part of the Cypriot delegation.

    A UN spokesman said ''discussions on substance will continue tomorrow (Thursday) and Friday.

    UN Under Secretary General, involved in Cyprus, to retire

    Nicosia, May 19 (CNA) -- UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has announced with ''real regret'' the retirement of UN Under Secretary General for Political Affairs Sir Kieran Prendergast, who will leave Department of Political Affairs (DPA) at the end of June, but will remain on staff until the end of the year.

    Prendergast is currently engaged in consultations at the UN with a Cypriot delegation, led by presidential envoy Ambassador Tasos Tzionis, on the prospects of resuming negotiations for a political settlement.

    Prendergast, who is expected to visit the region for talks on Cyprus at the beginning of June, after taking accumulated leave due to him during the summer he will, at the Secretary General's request, spend the fall semester as a Goodman Fellow at Harvard University, where he will write a report drawing on his experience at DPA and recommending how the United Nations can best fulfil its responsibilities in the areas of mediation support and conflict resolution.

    Vassilis Rologis elected Chairman of the Bank of Cyprus

    Nicosia, May 19 (CNA) -- Vassilis Rologis has been elected Chairman of the Bank of Cyprus Board of Directors in succession of Solon Triantafyllides, who served as Chairman of the Group for the past 17 years.

    The Board of Directors, which convened yesterday after the Shareholders' Annual General Meeting (AGM), also elected Andreas Artemis as Vice-Chairman of the Board.

    Triantafyllides told the AGM that due to health reasons he would not offer himself for relection to the chairmanship.

    1655:CYPPRESS:06 Weather forecast for Cyprus Nicosia, May 19 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Friday and Saturday: 20/05/2005 - 21/05/2005

    On Friday there will be temporal medium and high cloud. The wind will be initially northeast gentle breeze, 3BF and gradually will become gentle to moderate sea breezes, 3 to 4BF. The sea will be slight. Temperature will range between 18 and 37 degrees inland, between 20 and 31 degrees over the south and east coastal areas and between 16 and 27 over west coastal areas and over the mountainous areas.

    On Saturday afternoon, there is a probability of isolated showers, mainly over the mountainous areas and inland. Temperature will note a small decrease.

    Outlook for Sunday and Monday: 22/05/2005 - 23/05/2005

    No significant change from Saturday. Temperature will note a further significant decrease.

    Commissioner Almunia in Cyprus for Euro preparations

    Nicosia, May 19 (CNA) ---- European Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs Joaquin Almunia noted that the Cyprus finances are on the right track and expressed hope that the government's preparations to join the Euro would allow the creation of conditions to adopt the Euro as soon as possible.

    Alumnia is currently in Cyprus to discuss with Cypriot officials practical preparations for the introduction of the Euro. Today he was received by Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos and later on he had a meeting with Cyprus Minister of Finance Makis Keravnos.

    Nicosia, May 19 (CNA) Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said he was pleased that a big number of Turkish Cypriot companies are participating in the 30th Cyprus International Fair which officially opens here tonight.

    The Fair, providing a nine-day opportunity to Cypriots and other nationals living on the island to get the latest news in technology, commerce and industry, includes the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce with 50 participants, alongside 300 exhibitors who represent 1.500 companies from overseas.

    Commissioner Almunia stresses importance of Euro preparation

    Nicosia, May 19 (CNA) -- Successful entry into the euro area requires not only fulfillment of the Maastricht criteria, but also extensive and timely practical preparations, European Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs Joaquin Almunia has stressed here today.

    Almunia gave a speech in Nicosia on ''Practical preparations for the introduction of the euro in Cyprus'' and expressed conviction that the government of Cyprus would continue to implement its convergence program with determination, as this would help reduce ''the relatively high public debt to GDP ratio''.
