    US expect articulation-clarity on Greek Cypriot concerns on UN plan

    Washington, May 19 (CNA) The United States hope that the Greek Cypriots will respond to the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan's request that they articulate with clarity and finality their concerns about the Annan Plan, a UN-proposed solution which the overwhelming majority of the Greek Cypriots rejected in a referendum last year.

    ''We hope that the Greek Cypriots will respond to the UN Secretary General's request that they articulate with clarity and finality their concerns about the Annan Plan," a US State Department Spokesman said, asked about US expectations of ongoing meetings at the UN on Cyprus.

    Cyprus official interest rates decrease

    Nicosia, May 20 (CNA) The Cyprus Monetary Policy Committee decided today the decrease of official interest rates by 0.50 percentage points.

    The official interest rates of the Central Bank of Cyprus, that is the interest rates on the marginal lending facility and the deposit facility, were decreased by 0,50 percentage points to 4,75% and 2,75%, respectively.

    Nicosia, May 20 (CNA) -- The effort of the Greek Cypriot side for the right preparation for the resumption of negotiations is continuous, pledged here Friday Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides.

    He noted that if the UN believes that further deliberations should take place during the expected forthcoming visit of UN Under Secretary General for Political Affairs Sir Kieran Prendergast to Cyprus then this will also happen.

    Cyprus & Greece Justice Ministers pledge to promote common interests

    Nicosia, May 20 (CNA) -- Cyprus Justice and Public Order Minister Doros Theodorou and his Greek counterpart Anastasios Papaligouras, expressed today their intention for their ministries departments to cooperate with a view to promote the common interests of both countries in the field of justice.

    Speaking to the press after meeting Theodorou, Papaligouras said the systematic cooperation between the two ministries could be both on the field of law preparation and and in the penitentiary field, adding that ''Greece could give Cyprus the knowledge and experience'' it acquired during its 25-year old presence at the EU.

    Papaligouras invited Theodorou to visit Greece with a view to materialize their cooperation.

    Nicosia, May 20 (CNA) -- Cyprus Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism George Lillikas leaves Sunday for a three day official visit to Israel, at the invitation of the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Industry and Trade of Israel Ehud Olmert.

    The aim of Lillika's visit is to review relations between Cyprus and Israel in all fields, in the light of Cyprus' accession to the EU.

    Government satisfied Cyprus is removed from blacklist of flags

    Nicosia, May 20 (CNA) -- Cyprus Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides has said the fact that Cyprus was officially removed from the blacklist of flags maintained by the Paris Memorandum of Understanding on Port State Control, in which it was included in the last 20 years, is a great success for Cyprus shipping.

    Chrysostomides said that this is a very important development for Cyprus shipping and its shipping registry, and was the result of coordinated efforts by the Cyprus Government to monitor ships under the Cyprus flag.

    UN Under Secretary General to embark on tour for Cyprus

    United Nations, May 20 (CNA) -- UN Under Secretary General for Political Affairs Kieran Prendergast will visit Cyprus May 30-June 2, the UN announced today.

    A statement attributable to the Spokesman of the UN Secretary General said Prendergast would meet both Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, as well as political leaders on both sides ''to listen to the views of all parties on the future of the Secretary-Generals mission of good offices on Cyprus.

    From Cyprus he will travel to Athens and Ankara for consultations, before returning to New York on 7 June 2005 to report to the Secretary General.

    The statement, issued after the conclusion today of a series of meetings here on the Cyprus question between Prendergast and a Cyprus delegation, headed by the Cypriot President's envoy Tasos Tzionis, said discussions during these meetings were ''preliminary, informal and non-binding.''

    ''During these meetings, the Greek Cypriot delegation explained in detail their views on both procedure and substance,'' the statement added.

    Cyprus Shipping Council welcomes removal of Cyprus flag from Paris MOU

    Limassol, May 20 (CNA) -- The fact that Cyprus flag's was removed from the Paris MOU (Paris Memorandum of Understanding on port state control) signals a new era for Cyprus Shipping was stressed here Friday at the 16th Annual General Meeting of the Cyprus Shipping Council.

    Addressing the Meeting, House President Demetris Christofias marked with particular satisfaction that Cyprus' effort to improve the quality of its fleet produces the pursuing results, noting that ''the reduction that has been noticed during that last years in the detentions of Cyprus vessels internationally, and also the reduction in the percentage of inspected vessels with deficiencies, constitutes a witness to this.''

    Christofias also expressed hope that with the signature of the Additional Customs Protocol with the European Union by Turkey, Ankara will be compelled to raise prohibitions on Cyprus ships calling at Turkish ports.
