    US Senator:EU must demand Cyprus solution before Turkey's accession

    Nicosia, Aug 3 (CNA) -- US Rhode Island State Senator Leonidas Raptakis has called on the European Union to demand a settlement of the Cyprus issue before Turkeys admission to the EU.

    A press release issued by Raptakis said that he believed the EU must send a strong message to Ankara that time has come to abandon its dead-end policy of a divided Cyprus.

    Cypriot Spokesman says Turkey maintains inflexible policy

    Nicosia, Aug 3 (CNA) - Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said yesterday's statements by Turkish President Ahmet Nezdet Sezer and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat prove yet again the nationalistic and inflexible policy followed by Turkey.

    Pointing out that Sezer talked about the creation of a new partnership and a new state, Chrysostomides said what he was implying is that there is no change in the Turkish policy.

    Spokesman says Turkey obliged to recognise Cyprus

    Nicosia, Aug 3 (CNA) - Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides has said that the government was expecting Turkey to unreservedly sign the Ankara Agreement, stressing that its qualms revert the substance of the international agreement that the country has signed.

    Invited to comment on statements made yesterday by Commission Spokesman Amadeu Altafaj that the recognition of Cyprus follows a ''parallel procedure'' with Turkey's accession negotiations, however ''in another framework, that of the UN,'' Chrysostomides said a serious misunderstanding has occurred.

    Government wishes order during Anorthosis-Trabzonspor match

    Nicosia, Aug 3 (CNA) - Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides has expressed today the hope that order and fair play will dominate during tonight's match between Cypriot Anorthosis and Turkish Trabzonspor in Turkey during the second leg of the second qualifying round of the Champions League.

    He wished the Anorthosis of Famagusta every success and said he hoped it would qualify for the next round of the Champions League.

    Commission to move infringement procedures against Cyprus

    Nicosia, Aug 3 (CNA) - The European Commission has decided to pursue infringement procedures against 16 member-states, including Cyprus, for failure to implement various Financial Services Directives.

    According to a press release issued here today by the Commission Representation in Cyprus, the Commission will formally ask Belgium, the Czech Republic, Greece, Spain, France, Ireland, Cyprus, Latvia, Luxemburg, Hungary, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Finland, Sweden and the United Kingdom to quickly implement the necessary legislation in a total of 57 cases covering Directives on market abuse.

    Cyprus government reports new Turkish provocation to UNFICYP

    Nicosia, Aug 3 (CNA) - The National Guard and the Ministry of Defence have made representations to the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) following yesterday's actions by the Turkish occupation forces in the coastal area of Kato Pyrgos - Limnitis in Paphos, on the western coast of the island.

    Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides described as a ''usual phenomenon'' yesterday's sighting of a Turkish occupation vessel in the afternoon in the coastal area of Kato Pyrgos - Limnitis and crew placing three large buoys in the area.
