    Cyprus House President: Famagusta should be returned to its lawful inhabitants

    Nicosia, Aug 6 (CNA)-- Cypriot House of Representatives President Demetris Christofias reiterated today the need for the return of the Turkish-occupied city of Famagusta to its lawful inhabitants.

    Christofias was speaking to a group of personalities invited to Cyprus by Famagusta Municipality to attend the annual anti-occupation demonstration to protest against the occupation of the eastern coastal town.

    According to a press release issued the House of Representatives, during the meeting Christofias briefed his interlocutors on the recent developments on the Cyprus problem, in relation with Turkey's course towards the European Union.

    Increased security measures at Cypriot ports

    Nicosia, Aug 6 (CNA) -- The Republic of Cyprus has taken increased security measures at the ports of Limassol and Larnaca, after two Israeli flagged cruise ships, that were due to travel to Turkey, changed their course and docked at Limassol port due to information by the Israeli authorities that their safety was in danger.

    The cruise ships heading to Attalia, Turkey, anchored at Limassol port, whereas two other Israeli cruise ships, that followed their regular schedule docked at Larnaca port. In both ports and in the areas surrounding them the Cyprus authorities have taken extra security measures.

    Port Police Commander Antonis Siakalis told CNA that all four Israeli flagged cruise ships will depart this afternoon and return to Israel.

    Excavations reveal late Roman and early Byzantine workshops

    Nicosia, Aug 6 (CNA) -- Excavations from a Princeton University team that started on June 8, 2005, and wrapped up a month later at the western coastal town of Polis Chrysochous revealed use-levels of the second and first centuries BC above of which were late Roman and early Byzantine workshops. Right at the surface were sporadic traces of use in the twelfth century.

    Nicosia, Aug 6 (CNA) --- Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat's stance on Cyprus aims at undermining the creation of good climate between the two communities in Cyprus, Cyprus Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said today.

    ''For quite a while Talat's stance seems to aim at undermining the creation of a good climate of cooperation and understanding between the two communities in Cyprus. It is not a secret that Ankara dictates Talat's policy and his recent statements prove so'', the Spokesman said.

    Cyprus government takes action to prevent US illegal flight to occupied north

    Nicosia, Aug 6 (CNA)-- Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides confirmed a report in the Cypriot press that members and officials of the US Congress are planning to fly to Cyprus Turkish occupied areas on an illegal direct flight to the illegal airport of occupied Tymbou.

    Chrysostomides added that the government was aware of this flight for some time now and took action to prevent it both through the official channels of the Cypriot Foreign Ministry and Cypriot expatriates in the US.
