    Putin reiterates Russia's steadfast stance regarding Cyprus issue

    Nicosia, Sep 9 (CNA) ---- Russia maintains a steadfast stance regarding the solution of the Cyprus issue, under the auspices of the United Nations, and will continue to pursue a solution that would be to the benefit of all Cypriots, President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin has stressed, after a meeting in Greece with Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis.

    Putin said that Russia and Greece share similar views regarding the Cyprus question and he thanked Greece for its constructive stance regarding the development of the Russia - EU relations.

    Nicosia, Sep 9 (CNA) ---- The by-election for a new representative of the Armenian religious group to the Cyprus House of Representatives will take place October 9th, 2005.

    The new representative will succeed Bedros Kalaydjian, who died last week at the age of 71.

    Demining in Kaimakli area begins on Monday

    Nicosia, Sep 9 (CNA) ---- The United Nations Development Programme's Mine Action Center, funded by the European Union, will start de-mining operations in a new minefield in Kaimakli area, Nicosia, on Monday.

    According to a European Commission press release, this will be the fourth minefield to be cleared by the Mine Action Centre since the launch of Phase II on 12th of August, 2005 and the 17th since the beginning of the programme in November 2004.

    Czech Deputy FM: Turkey must recognize Cyprus

    Nicosia, Sep 9 (CNA) ---- The Czech Republic deems as unacceptable that Turkey, a European Union candidate, still does not recognize the Republic of Cyprus, which joined the Union in May 2004, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic Vladimir Mueller said here today.

    ''It is not acceptable for the Czech Republic that a member country of the EU is not recognized by a candidate country,'' Mueller said after official talks here with Permanent Secretary of the Foreign Ministry Ambassador Sotos Zackheos.

    Mueller called on Turkey to implement fully the protocol it has signed regarding the extension of its customs union to all new EU member states, including Cyprus.

    Cypriot FM has doubts that EU counterstatement will be issued

    Nicosia, Sep 9 (CNA) -- Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs George Iacovou has expressed serious doubts on whether or not the EU will finally adopt a counterstatement to respond to Turkey's unilateral declaration of not recognising the Republic of Cyprus.

    Speaking after a meeting today with Cyprus' main opposition party Democratic Rally President Nicos Anastasiades, Iacovou also expressed the belief that the period until October 3, when Turkey's accession negotiations are due to begin, will be quite difficult and that ''many maneuvers are requested to reach the result we want.''

    Nicosia, Sep 9 (CNA) - US Charges d'Affaires in Cyprus Jane Zimmerman has said the Republic of Cyprus's recognition by Turkey, in the framework of the latter's European course, rests with the members of the EU.

    Speaking to the press after a meeting with Cypriot Minister of Education and Culture Pefkios Georgiades, Zimmerman said ''we believe that Turkey's accession and the negotiation process and eventually getting Turkey on the path to join the EU is a way to promote the kind of reform that is much needed in Turkey and makes the country a better neighbour and a force for stability in the region rather than leaving the future up in question''.

    Nicosia, Sep 9 (CNA) -- Cypriot Minister of Finance Michael Sarris is attending today and tomorrow an informal ECOFIN meeting held in Manchester, Britain.

    A press release issued by the Ministry said the Council would discuss ways to confront the challenge of globalisation.

    Four out of ten Cypriots believe EU accession is positive

    Nicosia, Sep 9 (CNA) - Along with the United Kingdom (40%) and Austria (41%), Cyprus (CY 41%) has the lowest proportion of citizens who consider that EU participation has benefited their country, according to the Spring 2005 Eurobarometer for Cyprus (Areas Under the Control of the Cyprus Government and Turkish Cypriot Community).

    According to the national report for Cyprus, a year after Cyprus' accession into the European Union, only four out of ten citizens of the Republic of Cyprus believe that the accession has been a positive development.
