  • [01] FINNISH FM COMMISSIONER FERRERO-WALDNER CYPRUS LEBANON

European Union officials use Cyprus as a bridge in their effort to put an end to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

A high-ranking EU delegation made up of Finland`s Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja, whose country holds the rotating EU presidency, and Benita Ferrero-Waldner, the European Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighbourhood Policy, stopped over at Larnaca aiport this morning on their way to Lebanon from Israel.

The EU officials came from Tel Aviv and immediately boarded a French military helicopter heading for Beirut.

Tuomioja and Ferrero-Waldner were met at Larnaca airport by Cyprus Foreign Minister George Lillikas, Finland`s Ambassador in Nicosia Risto Pipponen, and Head of the Representation of the European Commission to Cyprus Themis Themistocleous.

[02] US HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CYPRUS - RESOLUTION

A resolution introduced in the US House of Representatives, commends the Republic of Cyprus and the Cypriot people for their support and assistance in the evacuation of Americans fleeing Lebanon.

Original co-sponsors of the resolution tabled are Republican Michael Bilirakis and leader of the Democrats at the International Relations Committee Tom Lantos. The resolution was supported by a further 29 members of the House from both parties.

    [03] CYPRUS PROPOSAL

Cyprus has made a proposal for the solution of the problem that lead to the conflict between Israeli army and Hezbollah, Cypriot Foreign Minister George Lillikas said.

Without elaborating, Lillikas said that the proposal, submitted ten days ago, could not be promoted because the conflict continued. ``So far there is no mediation because the conflict continues, but if there is an end to hostilities, our proposal could be used``, he added.

Lillikas also said that Cyprus is in favour of an immediate ceasefire ``because the continuation of the conflict does not offer anything more than the increase of the victims.``

    [04] GOVERNMENT - TECHNICAL DISCUSSIONS

Cypriot Government Spokesman Christodoulos Pashiardis said here Thursday that the Greek Cypriot side will meet the deadlines set out by the agreement of July on Technical discussions between the two communities, expressing hope that the Turkish side will show the necessary political will for the preparation of substantive negotiations for a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem.

On July 8 Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, met at the presence of UN Undesecretary-General for political affairs Ibrahim Gambari and agreed to begin a process of bicommunal discussions on issues that affect the day to day life of the people and concurrently those that concern substantive issues.
