[01] CYPRIOT MINISTER - IMO MEETING - OIL SPILL
Cypriot Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment
Fotis Fotiou went to Athens, to participate in the International
Maritime Organizations (IMO) meeting in Pireus, Greece, that will
coordinate efforts to address the pollution resulting from the oil
spill that threatens the eastern Mediterranean.
The oil spill is currently affecting the coastal and marine
environments of Lebanon and Syria.
Secretary-General of IMO Efthimios Mitropoulos and Achim Steiner,
Executive Director of United Nations Enviroment Programm called for a
co-ordination meeting in Piraeus, Greece, on Thursday, 17 August 2006
that will be hosted by Manolis Kefaloyannis, Minister of Mercantile
Marine of Greece.
[02] SPOKESMAN - CYPRUS PROBLEM - MORPHOU
The ultimate solution of the Cyprus problem is associated with the
reunification of the country, the people, the institutions and the
economy, pledged Deputy Minister to the President and Government
Spokesman Christodoulos Pashiardis, after accepting a resolution of the
Morphou Municipal Council and the Morphou Organisations.
He said that President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos is working
consistently and responsibly towards this kind of a solution.
On his part, Mayor of Morphou Charalambos Pittas said that the people
of Morphou want a more active involvement on the part of the permanent
members of the Security Council in order to take all necessary measures
to lift the illegality and the occupation of Cyprus northern third,
including Morphou.
