[01] MERKEL - ERDOGAN - CYPRUS
German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Thursday that Turkey should
fulfill its commitments stemming from the protocol (that extended its
Customs Union agreement to cover the new EU-member countries) in order
to maintain the negotiation process with the EU.
According to Turkish Anadolu News Agency, speaking at a joint press
conference with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan following
their tete-a-tete meeting in Ankara, Merkel said that her meeting with
Prime Minister Erdogan focused on Turkey-EU relations, Customs Union,
Turkey`s reform process and other related issues.
Upon a question, Merkel said, ``there is Ankara protocol and, in our
view, this protocol must be implemented.``
[02] HOUSE PRESIDENT - CYPRUS REPUBLIC`S INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY
President of the House of Representatives Demetris Christofias called
upon the Turkish Cypriots to struggle together with the Greek Cypriots
for a better future in a common homeland.
Speaking at the House of Representatives first plenary session after
the summer break, Christofias said we strive for a solution, for the
abolition of the Turkish occupation, for a reunited Cyprus, a common
homeland for Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Armenians and
Latins.
Christofias speech was made on the occasion of the Cyprus Republics
independence anniversary, that was celebrated last Sunday, October
1st.
