  • [01] MEETINGS FINLAND CANCELLED

The European Union`s Finnish presidency has cancelled meetings with Turkish and Cypriot officials planned for Sunday and Monday as part of its initiative over Cyprus.

According to news agencies Reuters and the French News Agency AFP, negotiations will continue at a political level from now on.

There is no chance for a meeting in Helsinki,`` Susanna Parkkonen, a spokeswoman for Finnish Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja was quoted by Reuters as saying.

We will continue negotiations at a political level from now on,`` Parkonnen said, adding that Tuomioja would meet Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat in Brussels on Friday.

In Brussels, a Finnish spokesman in Brussels said it proved impossible to organise the meetings.

``The meeting on Sunday has been cancelled, there will be no meetings at all,`` AFP quoted the spokesman as saying.

Recent press reports have suggested that Finland was planning to invite Turkish and Cypriot officials for meetings in Helsinki in a bid to sort out any problems relating to Turkey`s European Union accession course.

British Minister of State for Europe Geoff Hoon said Britain expects Turkey to accept its obligations under EU law.

He was speaking after a meeting in London with Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs George Lillikas.

In his remarks, Hoon said that the two ministers have built up ``a very good relationship`` and that ``we are able to discuss many issues about the bilateral relationship between the two countries as well as issues affecting the EU and Turkey.``

Hoon said ``I look forward to these conversations to continue perhaps next time in Cyprus.``

    [03] BULGARIA DEFENCE MINISTER CYPRUS

Bulgarias Defence Minister Veselin Bliznakov paid a one-day visit to Cyprus where he met his Cypriot counterpart Nicos Symeonides.

The two ministers and a multi-member delegation accompanying the Bulgarian minister inspected the Drazki warship of the Bulgarian Navy Force which participates in UNIFIL. The warship is currently docked at Larnaca Port.

During their meeting, Symeonides and Bliznakov examined developments surrounding the Cyprus problem and problems created by the continued occupation of the islands northern third by Turkey, as well as the recent crisis in Lebanon and the Middle East.
