[01] ANNAN - PRESSER - CYPRUSOutgoing UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan said the UN is still engaged with the parties in Cyprus, adding that responsibility will fall on his successor Ban Ki Moon who assumes duties in the coming January.``Im sure he will proceed along the same lines,`` Annan said replying to a question on whether he would pass his plan to his successor, during his farewell news conference as the international organization`s Chief. As Annan noted, ``we are still engaged with the parties``, noting that his Special Representative in Cyprus Michael Moller ``is working with them to build confidence.`` ``We have certain specific activities that the two of them are engaged in and I have indicated to them at the appropriate time when we believe the time is right we will name a full time negotiator, mediator to work with them,`` he added. ``I think it is important to find a way resolving this,`` the outgoing UN SG said, adding that ``the Cyprus issue is not an issue that affects only the two communities or Turkey and Greece, as today it has also become a European problem and it is something that we need to resolve as quickly as we can.`` ``I hope the UN will preside to deal with it``, he concluded. [02] SPOKESMAN TURKEYCypriot government Spokesman Christodoulos Pashiardes said that the Turkish government wants to present itself as the victim, whereas Turkey is the offender in matters concerning Cyprus.Pashiardes was invited to comment on Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogans statements that his country held a constructive stance during the April 2004 referendum for a comprehensive solution of the Cyprus issue. Erdogan also called for an end to the so-called isolation of the Turkish Cypriots and referred to an unjust behaviour of the EU towards Turkey. The offender presents himself as the victim Pashiardes said commenting on the Turkish Premier`s statements. Erdogan believes that all are to blame, including the UN, the EU, and Cyprus, for a major injustice against Turkey, he said. The one thing left is perhaps to accuse Cyprus that 32 years ago it invaded against Turkey and continues to occupy Turkish territory, he said [03] HOUSE - STATE BUDGET DEBATEThe Cypriot House of Representatives began a three-day discussion of the 2007 state budget.The budget provides for revenue amounting to 3.31 billion Cyprus pounds (one pound trades at approximately 1.5 US dollars) compared with 3.19 billion pounds during 2006, showing an increase of 3.8%. It also provides for 4.07 billion pounds in expenditure, compared to 4.03 billion pounds in 2006, showing an increase of 0.9%. Furthermore, Cyprus budget deficit could fall to 1.5 percent of the gross domestic product this year, almost half a percentage point better than earlier forecasts. [04] MAVROU - MAYOR - NICOSIAEleni Mavrou, the candidate of the ruling coalition comprising left-wing AKEL, the Democratic Party and the Social Democrats Movement EDEK, became the first female mayor of the divided capital of Nicosia.During Sunday`s municipal elections, Mavrou received a total of 9781 votes or 34.93%, against independent Anna Marangou, who was backed by main opposition party Democratic Rally (DISI) who secured 9007 votes or 32.17%. Outgoing mayor, independent Michalakis Zampellas garnered 7650 or 27.32% while independent candidate Nicos Mesaritis secured 1562 or 5.58%.
