  • [01] PAPADOPOULOS - GREECE

The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Tassos Papadopoulos, leaves February 20th for Greece, where he will meet with Greek Prime Minster Costas Karamanlis, announced Government Spokesman Christodoulos Pashiardes.

The recent developments regarding efforts to solve the Cyprus problem, as well as EU issues that concern Cyprus will be on the agenda of the meeting that will take place on February 21st.

Pashiardes did not rule out the possibility that during the meeting, Papadopoulos and Karamanlis will also discuss the issue of oil and natural gas exploration and exploitation in Cyprus coastal areas.

But the Spokesman said that President Papadopoulos visit in Athens was prescheduled and is not linked with the oil issue.

Naturally, during their meeting they will also refer to the oil issue, but this is not the main issue on the agenda. They will discuss the recent developments regarding the Cyprus problem and EU issues that concern Cyprus, he added.

During his visit there, President Papadopoulos will also hold separate meetings with the leaders of the Greek political parties.

President Papadopoulos will leave on February 20th and return to Cyprus on February 22nd.

EU member state, the Republic of Cyprus, is divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory.

    [02] GOVERNMENT - MOLLER

It is upo to the UN Secretary Generals Representative in Cyprus, Michael Moller, to decide when to invite the leaders of both communities in Cyprus for a meeting, with an aim to promote the July 8th agreement that would prepare the ground for talks on the Cyprus problem, said today Government Spokesman Christodoulos Pashiardes.

On July 8th 2006, Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat met in the presence of senior UN official Imbrahim Gambari and agreed to begin a process of bicommunal discussions on issues that affect the day-to-day life of the people and those that concern substantive issues.

Invited to comment on the statements made by Moller that the oil issue in Cyprus could help promote a meeting between President Papadopoulos and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, Pashiardes said the July 8th agreement provides for the circumstances under which a meeting between the two leaders could take place.

    [03] SPOKESMAN - ILLEGAL AIRPORT

Civil Aviation departments all over the world, should be aware of the fact that the airport in the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus is illegal, using an illegal code number, said Government Spokesman Christodoulos Pashiardes.

Answering to questions during his daily briefing, Pashiardes said that all tourist agencies abroad should know and do know that the airport is illegal.

He noted that ``the fact that the illegal airport at the Turkish occupied village of Tymbou uses an illegal code, does not legalize this airport. The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) is aware of the code and at the same time it has in mind that the particular airport is illegal.

Commenting on a remark that a Civil Aviation employee may not be aware of the illegality of the certain code, since there is no explanation in the system that the code reponds to an non recognized airport, Pashiardes said that all Civil Aviation departments abroad should know the existence of this code and the fact that this code concerns an illegal airport.
