    [02] COMMONWEALTH - CYPRUS

Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos has renewed the Republics commitment to the Commonwealth`s shared values, which, as he noted, are especially important and sacred.

Tolerance, respect, equality and the upholding of the fundamental principles of democracy, human rights and the rule of law, are not only central to our policy but also to our country`s being, Papadopoulos said in a message on the occasion of Commonwealth Day.

Referring to the islands accession to the Commonwealth in 1961, soon after its independence, the President noted that since then the Republic of Cyprus has been firmly committed to the principles and ideals of the Commonwealth.

The Commonwealth member states have steadfastly aligned themselves with the efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue. The Commonwealth has been continuously involved in the Cyprus issue, becoming even more active after the Turkish invasion of 1974. Our rightful claims and struggle for a just and viable solution have been consistently supported by the Commonwealth family, he said.
