Italian Vice President and Minister of Foreign Affairs Massimo DAlema
said on Monday that his country is in a position to be a friend of
Cyprus and at the same time to be one of the countries working to
maintain the dialogue for Turkey`s EU membership open.
``With this double capacity we think we must play the correct role to
encourage dialogue, abatement, and to overcome the reasons of
conflict,`` DAlema said.
The Italian official was speaking after talks with Cypriot Minister of
Foreign Affairs George Lillikas, who is paying a two-day visit to
Rome.
Lillikas expressed satisfaction for the Italian government`s position
that the July 8 agreement should be respected and implemented.
He said Italy supports the reunification and the peaceful coexistence
of the two communities in Cyprus, as well as the Gambari initiative.
