  • [01] ARCHBISHOP OF GREECE - LARNACA

Larnaca citizens welcomed Archbishop of Athens and All Greece Christodoulos with chimes, rose petals and brushes of myrtle as he arrived in the town on the fifth day of his visit to the island.

The welcoming ceremony was led by Bishop of Kition Chrysostomos, flanked by the church and municipal authorities of the town, including Ministers of Justice and Public Order and Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment, Sophocles Sophocleous and Fotis Fotiou respectively.

Students and pupils as well as MPs and scores of people gathered at the Kition Bishopric to get a glimpse of the head of the Greek Church, who was accompanied by Archbishop of Cyprus Chrysostomos II and the Bishops of Limassol Athanasios, Morphou Neophytos and Bishop of Vostron.

After attending a Te Deum at the Sotiras Church in Larnaca, the towns Bishop Chrysostomos referred to the sincere and true friendship and cooperation he has with Archbishop Christodoulos, noting that the Primate of the Greek Church showed his true love to the people of Cyprus, especially during the tragic days of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974.

In his reply, the Greek Archbishop said that the Church of Cyprus has been an endless source of inspiration and solace for Cypriot Hellenism during all historical times and constitutes a spiritual strength to treat the wounds of the recent past and make fuller use of the new European perspective.

He also referred to the multifaceted social and charitable work which Bishop of Kition Chrysostomos carries out, as well as the charities which he has helped start and continue their work.

[02] CENTRAL BANK GOVERNOR - ASSUMES DUTIES

New Central Bank Governor Athanasios Orfanides expressed his determination to work consistently to achieve the aims of the Central Bank and assured that the institution will respond to the increased demands created with the forthcoming accession of Cyprus to the Eurozone.

Speaking during a ceremony where he officially undertook his duties from Christodoulos Christodoulou, the new Central Bank Governor said that his priorities are the smooth introduction of the Euro on the island, maintaining price stability, macroeconomic stability and a robust banking system.

Outgoing Governor Christodoulou described his successor as ``a gifted man with many virtues, qualifications and experience`` and said he was certain that Orfanides will be able, with the help of the Central Bank staff, to fulfill with success the hard work he is called to perform.

Minister of Finance Michalis Sarris, who was also present at the ceremony, thanked Christodoulou for his long and substantial contribution.
