  • [01] EDEK - PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS

The Central Committee of the Social Democrats Movement EDEK has ratified, with some amendments, a decision taken by the party Political Bureau to back President Tassos Papadopoulos in Februarys presidential elections, should he decide to run for a second term. The decision, by 126 votes in favour and one against, said that EDEKs support would be subject to commitments to be undertaken by Papadopoulos which should be in line with those of EDEK.

Addressing on Sunday a meeting of the Political Bureau, EDEK President Yiannakis Omirou said that he would put his candidacy forward for next years elections, if Papadopoulos does not run. He said the amendments adopted by the Political Bureau related to a call to President Papadopoulos to announce his decision to run for reelection. In addition to that, the Bureau sends an open invitation and appeal to all the parties that current make up the government and back Papdopoulos to continue their cooperation for the next five year presidential term in office.

President Papadopoulos will seek reelection in Februarys presidential elections, even if not all the political powers that make up the tri-partite cooperation that currently backs him do not go along with him, Omirou told the meeting. He said EDEK aims at the continuation of the alliance (made up of the ruling Democratic Party DIKO, the left-wing AKEL and EDEK) and explained that party plans to run independently for the presidency have not been excluded.
